1. The meteors beneath the azure dome
Like bubbles floating upon the foam

2. Bound by gravity just as it is bound
As parts to parts the cosmic whole around

3. And the universe one body appears
With spaces dividing its spheres

4. Gravity but an affinity seems
'Twixt essences when one keenly gleams

5. And if we posit there is no pull then
No push which means no end or aught again

6. And we say God moved it though nothing bid
Its stillness in the void forbid

7. Since no friction it withstands
Nor aught to counter it expands

8. But as God acts always in our view
Through causes as means, as if true

9. ‘Tween planets He placed a pow'r
By induction called gravity's tow'r

10. So blessed the Maker in its erection
On fancied base a strange perception

11. And ordainer of spheres in their courses
Like beads appear to sight's forces

12. With no end or beginning's deduction
Can be made by our minds' production

13. Whence name we things and limits propose
As names' content reality shows

14. Never completely has naming availed
To comprehend all details unveiled

15. Yet wondrously we still thereby gain
With minds that search, though much remain

16. Our minds course o'er effects, and retreat
Finding only despair at defeat
