1. You're not for me, nor am I for you, though passion
And longing and thought have overcome me.

2. She wept copiously when tears flowed
Uncontrolled, lest you see my liver scattered in grief.

3. Where is al-Husayn and the martyrs among the sons of Hasan,
Ja'far, 'Aqil - sorrow has overwhelmed them?

4. Martyrs for whom the House and stones yearn,
Yearning, and verses and surahs weep for them.

5. Al-Husayn died by hands in whose vengeance
Is length, though her compassion is brief.

6. The enemies did not stop shedding blood when they attacked,
But your grave contains what it contains, O pit!

7. When they saw the ways of patience were inclined
Towards a meeting and encounter with merciful patience, they were steadfast.

8. They said to themselves: O excellent descent -
Muhammad and Ali after him, excellent leader!

9. Return delighted, splendid, Family of Fatima,
To the Spring of Abundance, so they chose killing and were steadfast.

10. The Spring is their spring, and the grandfather their grandfather,
And with their Lord they have no equal in His creation.

11. I cry for you, O sons of piety, and mourn you,
And I drink patience, which is the cup and patience itself.

12. I cry for you, O sons of the Messenger's daughter - the showers
And rains did not spare your places.

13. I have no time for Uthman - I lament him,
Nor does Abu Bakr or Umar wound me.

14. For you there is an enemy - and for us glories and treasures -
Umayya, while for us are the banners and the caves.

15. Every day, remembering them brings me
Estrangement, and my tears flow abundantly for them.

16. Killing and death with split skulls
Among Hashim - victory and triumph failed them.

17. It is enough that God's respite will come one day,
And God sees all affairs in this world.

18. Shall I forget Ali and the rebels' betrayal of him?
The wicked will be known tomorrow.

19. Who was it the ruins and trees spoke to
And greeted as he called, and the stones saluted?

20. When the living from Yemen saw
His proof, they believed after their disbelief.

21. Or he who gained precedence at the Camel,
While on their necks were falsehood and vanity?

22. Or he who stood firm at Uhud, foot planted,
And at Hunayn and Sal` after they stumbled?

23. Or he who attacked the fortresses for them,
Conquering Khaybar after they were broken?

24. Did not the Messenger of God address them in a sermon:
"Your master - O people - is this man"?

25. Did Muhammad the Chosen raise the forelegs
Of anyone but Ali? Do donkeys understand?

26. Leave your groping in deep darkness
Where no star shines nor moon appears.

27. The truth is dazzling, and the signs clear,
If only the malicious souls believed, or they had discerned!
