1. My poetry was stolen by your beauty
So I went around covering paper with it
١. من حُسنِك شِعري قد سُرقا
فغَدَوتُ بهِ أكسُو الوَرَقا
2. How much I said and my words were wondrous
Glory to the Creator and what He created
٢. كم قلتُ وفي قولي عجبٌ
سُبحانَ الخالقِ ما خَلقا
3. The Pope leaves his prayers
To kiss your necklace and nape
٣. البابا يَتركُ سُبحَتَهُ
ليقبِّلَ عقدك والعُنُقا
4. And the heart of the monk is ablaze
Like incense burning in the altar
٤. وفؤادُ الرّاهِبِ من ولَهٍ
كبخورِ المذبحِ مُحترقا
5. If you let down your hair for me at dusk
From your cheek the sunset emerged
٥. إن تُرخي شعرَكِ لي غَسقاً
من خَدِّكِ أطلعت الشَّفَقا
6. Your cheeks when they blushed shyly
Were like a pomegranate ripening in the sun, split open
٦. خدَّاكِ إذا احمرّا خَجَلاً
رمّانٌ في الشمسِ انفَلقا
7. And poetry was like pearls that kept me awake
While your forehead was like the rising dawn
٧. والشَّعرُ كليلٍ أرّقني
وجبينُكِ كالصبحِ انبثَقا
8. Your eyelids are languorous with kohl
And my eyelids languid from insomnia
٨. وجفونكِ ذابلةٌ كحلاً
وجفُوني ذابلةٌ أرقا
9. Your waist is drowned in a grassy hillock
Without it my heart would not have drowned
٩. والخَصرُ غريقٌ في كفَلٍ
لولاهُ قلبي ما غَرِقا
10. Your green anklet pulled
My heart so it came to love confusion
١٠. حلَّتُكِ الخضراءُ اجتَذَبَت
قلبي فغَدا يهوى الحبَقا
11. Pass by me, sway, and smile
So I can smell fragrance and see anxiety
١١. مرّي وتَثنّي وابتسِمي
لأشمَّ شذاً وأرى قلقا
12. Woe to the lover if your eyes glance
And woe if they glance again
١٢. واهاً للعاشقِ إن رمقت
عيناكِ وَواهاً إن رَمقا
13. No gazelle meets a gazing gazelle
Or lightning in the darkness flashes lightning
١٣. ما ظبّةُ تلقاها ظبةٌ
أو بَرقٌ في حَلكٍ بَرَقا
14. With more intense and dazzling than a gaze
If the pupil meets a pupil
١٤. بأحَدَّ وأبهرَ مِن نَظَرٍ
إن صادَفَت الحدقُ الحدَقا
