1. This borage glistens with dew
As if it were tears on eyelids that show

2. The branch sways, scattered and illuminated
The birds chirp, warbling and singing

3. The water ripples and bubbles
The flowers bloom, yellow and flushed

4. Why should I wait when dawn awakens desire
And the cup rises on my right, prepared

5. Go, my friend, to the companions and say
Arise, and for the wine let us build a shrine

6. The Magi strayed with their fire and calf
The Jews strayed, but the monk found guidance

7. In an assembly filled and a monastery empty
He found Him, reverently drinking wine

8. And the people prayed behind him until
When he raised the cup, they bowed down prostrate

9. Had the Prophet Muhammad not forbidden it
He would have followed the Christians and Jews, Muhammad

10. God bless you, oh joy of music
Who accepted the call and did not hesitate

11. Leave the juice chilled in a jar
For the noble in life the sweetest place to drink

12. And when the bottles lift up their necks
Hasten your cups, then extend to them your hand

13. For I have seen you in gatherings judicious
And I have seen myself among the revelers as master

14. The cup is like a breast in days of nursing
So I am your brother through it, and you are the one ransomed

15. Wine is only for the refined, for it
Increases their gentleness and affection

16. I swear by it, its bubbles and its cup
I shall not offer it to the sullen puritan

17. For I have seen you greeting and greeted
And I have seen your foe frowning and threatening

18. The wind in you and in him shows its effect
Until when you reconciled, he was the corrupter

19. Like Abu Nuwas, al-Walid and Muslim
Their beloved, and by them he emulated and followed

20. The judicious of the wine folk, their goodness is hoped for
For long they have extended their palms to the drink

21. Their qualities have softened, so their beauty spread
No difference between loved ones and enemies

22. So let us drink to their charms, and not
Deprive, so the secret of our wine is wasted
