إذا شممت الغداة أفواها

1. When at dawn I inhale their breath
I tear open the maidens' mouths

١. إذا شمَمتُ الغداةَ أفواها
من العذارى نشَقتُ أفواها

2. And if I sip the wine it intoxicates me
As if its fervor has crept into my mind

٢. وإن رَشفتُ الرِّضابَ أسكرَني
كأن خمراً دَبّت حميَّاها

3. How many fair ones like angels I startled
Who said "I seek refuge in Allah"

٣. كم ناهدٍ كالملاكِ روَّعها
بأسي فقالت أستغفِرُ الله

4. But from their hearts they revealed
As their mouths they covered with their hands

٤. لكنّها عن فؤادها كشَفَت
إذ بيَدَيها غطّت محيّاها

5. And after teasing and flirting for a while
I kissed her mouth and her cheek reddened

٥. وبعدَ ذلّي ودلِّها زمناً
قبَّلت فاها فاحمرَّ خدّاها

6. And I yearned and was shy
Her eyes lowered in submission

٦. وبتُّ أرنو شوقاً ومن خجلٍ
تخشعُ عندَ التَّسليمِ عيناها

7. Nothing was more delicious in the kiss
Than her moan when I pulled her close

٧. ما كان أشهى في اللَّثمِ زفرتها
وعند ضمِّي صيحتُها واها

8. In the pain of love is pleasure that captivated
My heart, and under the swords is its comfort

٨. في ألمِ الحبّ لذةٌ خلبت
قلبي وتحتَ السيوفِ أحلاها
