1. I saw that the sword's sheath is now empty
And I had hoped to rely on it in times of distress
١. تبيَّنتُ أنَّ السَّيفَ قد فُلَّ غِمدُهُ
وقد كنتُ أرجوهُ لنائبةِ الدّهرِ
2. But time turned against me in this regard
And the turns of fate came from where I knew not
٢. فعاندني فيهِ الزَّمانُ وريبُهُ
وجاءت صروفُ الدَّهرِ من حيثُ لا أدري
