1. O you who hinders my tranquil sleep, yet I
Would grant him what cannot be slighted when granted
2. And give generously of myself, though I am precious
And which gallant gives generously of his soul and is clement?
3. He distances me from union with his aloofness
And he has no tenderness for my passion
4. And he shows me ignorance in the excess of my ardour
While he is knowing how I spend my evenings and mornings
5. I observe him suddenly with a woman of scarce means
Her tears brimming over her
6. So I let my eyes roam in the gardens of his beauty
For the eye has freedom in the meadow of observation
7. I restrain the water of the eye though it is flowing
And I conceal the spark of passion though it flares
8. How can I restrain the water when the eye is immersed
And hide the flame of fire when the fire scorches?
