1. A happy visitor came,
While the night spread its cold around.
١. وشادنٍ شادٍ أتى زائراً
واللَّيلُ مُرخي جانِبي بُردهِ
2. It appeared, so I said the full moon rises,
It drew near, so I said the bird twitters.
٢. بدا فقلتُ البدرُ في تمِّهِ
شدا فقلتُ الطيرُ في رَندهِ
3. Light shone on his cheeks,
So the fire of my passion was kindled by his incense.
٣. نورٌ بخدّيهِ بدا زاهياً
فنارُ وجدي مِن سنا وقدِهِ
4. He pierced my heart with love,
With his shaking spear from his height.
٤. راحَ بقلبي في الهوى طاعناً
برمحهِ المهزوزِ مِن قدِّهِ
5. And he drew his sword from his eyelids,
So it cut through my insides in its sheath.
٥. وسلَّ مِن أجفانهِ صارِماً
فقطّعَ الأحشاءَ في غِمدِهِ
6. A wonder, a sword tied to his eyelid,
The wound of my heart by the keenness of its edge.
٦. فاعجب لسيفٍ لازمٍ جفنهُ
جُرحُ فؤادي بشبا حدِّهِ
7. A sleepy eyelid passed the night jesting,
My watchful eyes gain seriousness in its daze.
٧. ناعسُ طرفٍ بات مِن هزلهِ
يُفيدُ طرفي الجِدَّ في سُهدِهِ
8. A night that gave me pleasure through him,
Mixing my affection with his love.
٨. وليلةٍ قد متّعتني بهِ
يخلُطُ ودِّي بجنَي وُدِّهِ
9. He was generous with the truth after
He was stingy with the phantom of dreams.
٩. جادَ بحقِّ الزّورِ مِن بعدما
شحَّ بزورِ الطّيفِ في صَدِّهِ
10. So I stay awake and the night is shortened
By my vigil on his chest.
١٠. فَبِتُّ واللّيلةُ قد قُصِّرت
بطولِ أكبابي على نَهدِهِ
11. The sight of a fawn came generously close,
With all I had wished for in its distance.
١١. قريرَ عينٍ جادَ لي قُربُهُ
بكلِّ ما أمَّلتُ في بُعدِهِ
12. It makes me drink coffee from its saliva
Poured cold in its honey.
١٢. يُعلُّني من ريقهِ قهوةً
بالباردِ المصبُوبِ في شهدِهِ
13. I swooned from joy over him,
The swoon of a captive just freed from his chains.
١٣. ذهلت مِن فرطِ سُروري بهِ
ذهلةَ عانٍ فُكَّ مشن قَيدِه
14. So tears flowed passionately as
Beauty's water froze on his cheek.
١٤. فسالَ ماءُ الدّمعِ وجداً كما
جُمِّد ماءُ الحسنِ في خَدِّهِ
15. He cried over my pain out of mercy,
When harshness softens in intensity.
١٥. بكى على ضُرِّي بهِ رحمةً
وقد يلينُ المرءُ في شدِّهِ
16. As if the tears on his cheek
Were drops of dew falling on roses.
١٦. كأنَّما الدّمعُ على خدّهِ
تساقُطُ الطّلّ على وَردِهِ
17. His scattered tears from his braids
And his strung lips in his necklace.
١٧. فدمعُهُ المنثورُ مِن سِلكهِ
وثغرُهُ المنظومُ في عِقدِهِ
18. If time brings me its like again
I will count it from time itself.
١٨. متى أعادَ الدّهرُ لي مِثلها
أَعتدُّها للدّهرِ مِن عندِهِ
19. The rain clouds poured you a cup
Rhythmically, from its thunder.
١٩. سقاكَ كأسَ الغيثِ كفُّ الحيا
على خفيفِ الوزنِ من رعدِهِ
