1. O Egypt, I quench you from a heavenly garden
Whose branches bear ripe, low-hanging fruit

2. Your soil is as soft as silk
And your water as clear as pure silver

3. Your breeze puts musk to shame
And your blossoms make the precious look cheap

4. So intricate are the qualities you encompass
None can compare to your beauty

5. Since travelers arrived in your land
I've forgotten my friends and loved ones

6. O God protect this garden
Whose delight suffices and heals

7. In it is the heart's remedy, its birds
Warbling melodiously like a harp

8. Whoever wishes to live happy and content
In prosperous and satisfying life

9. Let him leave knowledge and its people
And let ignorance cover him

10. Put aside medicine, logic
And grammar, exegesis in a corner

11. Leave study and teaching
And text, commentary, footnote

12. O life, how long will you torment me
With your miserable days?

13. Grant me hopes, I implore you
And do not dash my aspirations

14. If you think me one of them
Yours is a feeble assumption

15. Stop torturing me, or I shall complain
