1. I knew him, and free men were his leaders,
He prides himself on his morals, like a branch prides itself on its leaves.
١. عرفتُه والنجادُ الحُرُّ رائدُهُ
يزهو بأخلاقِهِ كالغصن بالوَرَقِ
2. The surges of disobedience did not bend his traits,
Nor the scents of musk in manners.
٢. لم تَثْنِ هُوجُ المعاصي من شمائله
ولاَ نَفَحاتِ الطيبِ في الخُلُقِ
3. It is as if dawn melted into him, emerging,
So his soul purified itself like dawn in the dunes.
٣. كأنما ذابَ فيه الفجرُ منبثِقاً
فطهّرتْ نفسه كالفجرِ في البُنُقِ
4. And the flowers longed for a soul whose essence was perfumed,
So he took refuge in beautiful and fragrant myrtle.
٤. واشتاقَها الزهرُ نفساً طابَ عُنْصُرُها
فعاذَ بالأَرْوْعَينِ الحسنِ والعَبَقِ
5. A virgin like a bright star, dressed
In the veils of light that illuminate the darkness of night.
٥. عذراء كالنجمةِ الغراء كاسية
مطارفَ النور تجلو غيهبَ الغَسَقِ
6. Except misguidance is a cloud around her that faded away,
It is as if she is the star of the sailor on the horizon.
٦. إلا الردى غيمة من حولها فخبت
كأنّها نجمة الملاّح في الأُفُقِ
