4. They worshipped idols but worshipped
Honor even more, preserving it preciously

قبلها العرض فصانوه كراما
5. They indulged in pride and in God
Making the soul take pride as a defense
٥. ألهوا العزة واللات لدن
جعلوا للنفس بالعز اعتصاما

For the Bani Kindah who prize tents

لبنى كندة تبتز الخياما
8. For Ibn Hajar, a tent shades him
Sheltering the free spirited man
٨. لابن حجر في ذراها خيمة
ظللت منه الفتى الحر الهماما
9. A king in Tay quenches his kingdom
A poet who composes unrivalled verse
٩. ملك في طي يروي ملكه
شاعر أبدع حتى لن يراما
10. The princes of poetry bow their heads
To the prince of poetry out of love and respect
١٠. أمراء الشعر تحني رأسها
لأمير الشعر حبا واحتشاما
11. My prince, the Arabs, when
Glory is mentioned, have magnificent signs
١١. يا أميري أن للعرب إذا
ذكر المجد لآيات جساما
12. If you became king over them
How many kings after you did time install
١٢. إن تكن قد قمت فيهم ملكا
كم مليك بعدك الدهر أقاما
13. Kingship did not immortalize your memory
As poetry immortalized your name forever
١٣. لم يخلد ذكرك الملك كما
خلد الشعر لك الذكر دواما
14. You wept one day for the humiliation of a crown
You wept for ruins fallen into decay
١٤. وبكيت التاج يوما ذلة
وبكيت الطلل البالي هياما
15. How humiliating are tears for a king!
How noble are tears when shed in passion!
١٥. ما أذل الدمع للملك وما
أشرف الدمع إذا سال غراما

حبذا العرب ومن أمضى حساما
17. Nights ransom our night
As it smiles through the mouth of time
١٧. الليالي تفتدي ليلتنا
ما تراها في فم الدهر ابتساما
18. Ukaz market assembled us
So we renewed it with eloquence and order
١٨. مثلت سوق عكاظ بيننا
فاستجدناها بيانا ونظاما
19. And it narrated the loyalty of the Arabs
How excellent were the Arabs, so generous!
١٩. وروت عن شيم العرب الوفا
حبذا العرب فقد كانوا كراما
20. History exalts their mention
They filled days with mighty deeds
٢٠. أكبر التاريخ ذكراهم لدن
ملأوا الأيام أعمالا عظاما
21. O Imru al-Qays, rest your soul
In this night filled with peace
٢١. يا امرأ القيس أطف روحك في
هذه الليلة تملأها سلاما
22. In the virtues of Arabs you found glory
As you did in Baghdad a dwelling
٢٢. في فروق العرب عزت منزلا
مثلما عزت ببغداد مقاما
23. Wherever they were, they were people of nobility
If only they did not challenge each other to war
٢٣. حيثما كانوا فهم أهل العلى
لو هم لا يتحدون الخصاما
24. If I were Imru al-Qays, I would have found
Words and speech in praise of them
٢٤. أنا لو كنت امرأ القيس لهم
لأجدت القول فيهم والكلاما
25. So stop, let's weep - no, I didn't say
Stop, let's weep - for their union and harmony
٢٥. فقفا نبك حبيبا لم أقل
بل قفا نبك اتحادا ووئاما
