1. You sought the friendship of the virtuous men,
And looked for their noble qualities and inspected them.

2. So when you find one with wisdom and piety,
Strengthen your relationship with him.

3. And when inevitably you see a flaw,
Overlook your brother’s lapse with your forbearance.

4. And leave behind flattery and groveling if you seek
The nearness of one who distances himself when you draw near.
