1. O shadow of the wave, the sea rises turbulent
Within it as if a mountain is uprooted in the sea

2. You'd think an earthquake sat on the water
Or a whirlpool lay down in the water

3. It churned, then swelled, then bent, then fell
Then closed in and collapsed like terror charges forth

4. Upon a drowning man holding onto a water rope
And the rope in the grasp of his hands gets cut off

5. He has a bit of spirit left in his fingers
That contends with death in them as it gets pulled out

6. Between life and death, battered
The sea vomits him in rounds and swallows him

7. Is that a greater horror in his anguish
Or have lovers in their loved ones grieved more

8. Oh how my soul reckons the lovers
When the beloved was extracted from their hearts torn

9. Love kills them with patience if they are patient
And love kills them with anxiety if they despair

10. If they bid farewell to one leaving, their sorrow did not meet
Not that he left, but that they returned

11. My Lord, when will you send tribulations devised
On this earth, for forgetfulness to be devised
