1. I fear his eyelids that shed no tears
And my sword's edge that strikes no blows

13. I rose up like a lion leaving its den
After its shelters were smashed and claws demurred

14. I resigned myself to joy and passion
Creeping through my heart on scurrying feet

15. She lowered her gaze, then looked up and resigned
After the water's bitterness, clear and sweet

16. By God, how sweet the words I heard from her
As though an orphan comforted by his dear

17. It is the wine, but for its intoxication
It is the magic, but for its harm and fear

18. I said, I know love is, by God
A heart's demands that know no bounds or peer

19. She replied, yes and if you wish, know too
It is time's afflictions, countless and severe

20. I unveiled to her a passionate, joyful love
Where duty contends with me and I persevere

21. I said, this heart is possessed by madness
Else what leaps inside my ribs with no veneer?

22. She swayed like a sapling, its branches outstretched
And when I sensed the poetry, flags appeared

23. She delighted in my words and laughed
As though I were a babe she bounced on her knee

24. Once my breast had doused hopes' light
And was as dark as the night that disappeared at dawn's first cheer

25. She said, I fear the people, for in love
The ignoble spy and noble interfere

26. Then she startled my heart, not knowing
My heart is firm, tough, it does not fear

27. When she saw me distraught but undismayed
Another distracted her, the hunted deer

28. She left saying, such is the fate of love
After the affair begins, ends draw near

29. She left my heart alone on the tram
Crying out, but who might answer its call and volunteer?
