1. He passed away, meeting two stars on the horizon
Leaving me with his glory, myself and glory

2. If I weep for him, poetry rains a shower
Upon every land, lightning and thunder erupt

3. If I inherit any of his attributes, the morning blows
With the sun, throwing roses in its rays

4. I am wretched if I leave upon sadness
A grudging liver that I did not find joy for

5. My poetry is not poetry the day it scatters weeping
If it does not drop pearls from its strands

6. Nor is it my poetry, oh father, if I leave it
And the days do not keep for you all praise from it

7. But I cried for myself, by God, if I see
A day of yours except a pillar of my soul collapsed

8. With your death, promises died in my heart
From fate, patience was among them a promise

9. So O certifier of life with its hopes, bid farewell
For what else rules this soul but firmness?

10. And O seeker of pure days, do you not see
Your day whitens only to blacken?

11. Days divide us in their motions
If they left a single, they took a single

12. Oh, if only this death came once
But for a matter neither reversing nor renewing

13. And the first death of the living is the death of their beloved
Like loss, sadness has shrouded loss

14. The young man lives after the beloved as if
A mistake remained that he sees intentional misery

15. The anguished does not know if his long life
In his living extended or his death extended?

16. As if my sorrows from parting with loved ones
Match what distance is between us and them

17. O father, if God settled angels in the burial ground
They would renew affection at him

18. If I sought your eyes in the earth comparing
A heavenly example, none resemble it

19. Guidance erupting the gloomy night in its path
It was only the dawn’s rising or brighter

20. And a banner whose shaking loosens its peg
People see the meaning they name righteousness

21. And from the blossom of God's light in the garden of his heart
A discourse for him with no sin or hatred

22. Those who visit him see he is a temple
Robed with purity and devotion

23. So O death, what you presented of him to his Lord
Except a flower held in the palm of its Creator

24. And more wondrous in lofty heights when soaring
And among the noble youths when counting

25. You see the firmly seated mountain in its dignity
Settled so it transcended creation’s gathered might

26. Your awe of him is Umar’s majesty
And enough that one who lived to him lived fully

27. And it is but of Nizar and Europius
Love for a curled-haired hero by a curled-haired hero

28. So he came like the sword’s blade shaking a sharp edge
God’s hand alone from it dictated severity

29. As if Arab souls wrung him out
As spears, swords and eloquent tongues

30. Whoever meets him, meets time in its fullness
Nay, meets his fullness as enough counted

31. Whoever contemplates him left and right
Saw glory here and glory there

32. Whoever in history was limited by his ancestors
You find him history itself inherited glory

33. And however much an attribute like straightness he embodied
And nullified in others, sheathed in its scabbard

34. With what the young man's soul reached, the young man knows
And the one of lineage, if he jokes, did not transgress

35. Among people are heroes you see the individual among them
Alone, and from his manners a mass of troops

36. You will not see the fierce lion in a man
Unless you witness souls created lions

37. Yet he is more gentle than dew
And more compassionate than the blowing breeze returning

38. I did not know, did he in his coldness go too far
Or did the gentle King wear coldness?

39. No kiss of love preceded the kiss I knew of him
Nor will I find after that consent, any consent

40. The soul has a living from faces surrounding it
A face sees misery and a face sees luxury

41. And I witness what is in the earth of its Lord's making
Is like the heart of a righteous father loving his son

42. If not for the affection of parents, the children of earth
Would not have seen anything making them understand eternity

43. From love of young fathers for their little ones
The infant soul becomes accustomed to inhabit the flesh

44. Had the people - the extremists - contemplated
They would be certain of their destruction as long as their fathers exist

45. Heaven's tongue exempted you in the hearing of the devout
From the precious daughter it intended directly

46. Informing her at dawn, conveying
The news of her father's death while she listens to the best guidance

47. If not for you, no return to earth would have occurred
That Gabriel, revelation and the covenant would remember

48. If they mentioned a peer for your knowledge in existence
Then they will never mention for this, ever, a peer

49. The proof for your favor came from heaven
So who on earth can tolerate denying it?

50. Oh father, farewell is for an end
Fate insists upon in its course firmly

51. Whoever earth carried and provided her bounty
Ended where the wretched life ended

52. With the cycle of lifespans an east and west
But that is called ill-fortune and this, fortune

53. From whichever direction I turned towards its ocean
You see it in every direction cast a barrier

54. We were created on an earth rounded and overturning
So wherever one turns on it, opposed

55. Peace of God be upon you from between His spirit
And your grave, passing from spirits to the resting place

56. O best master, you are the most merciful of mercies
And most generous of those whose generosity rewards a servant
