1. They called me foolish for turning my sight away from them,
And my desire away from the disobedient among mankind.

2. They called me foolish for entrusting my affairs,
To the King of the universe, most pure and most turbid.

3. They called me foolish for my love of my Creator, my King,
And I never complained of harm from mortals.

4. They called me foolish for not fearing anyone,
And hoping only in the Merciful, the Almighty.

5. They called me foolish for following the path of our refuge,
To the Shaykh, my master, the essence of good in experience.

6. So I said, leave me be and ignore my folly,
I have nothing but obedience to the Merciful to offer.

7. I have nothing but Allah, for who else veils me,
And the two angels of death burden me.

8. I have nothing tomorrow when Azrael takes my soul,
No helper but my Master in the graves.

9. I have nothing tomorrow on the day all are resurrected,
Except my Gentle Lord, Commander of mankind.

10. I have nothing when harm saddens and times burden me,
Except my Merciful Lord, strike for me.

11. If they call me foolish for the lesson I have taken,
From the Shaykh my master, the shaykh of nomad and town.

12. Then I will never be as rightly guided as their guidance,
For one day the greatest path will become distinct.

13. Praise be to Allah that our foolishness
Was continuity of lesson, remembrance, and reflection.
