1. O you whose tender glances and sorrowful heart
Are ever shedding copious tears,

2. If a flash of lightning gleams or a bird sings,
Sighs of utmost grief ascend.

3. A cloud of sadness comes over me, and yearning
When an feast reminds me of my youth.

4. So God has two tearful eyes whose affairs
Their misfortunes pour down in torrents.

5. My nights - what intercessor have I but my slenderness
To lead me back to those maidens?

6. When I was the elegant youth, depicting
Ambergris, camphor, and pearls.

7. I would go and return between visits and gatherings
And a beloved one of graceful movements,

8. When we sat in gardens in the morning
On carpets sprinkled with perfume.

9. How many gardens on earth whose fruits stoop down
With chambers - what chambers!

10. We spent our days there drinking wine
Among cupbearers of downcast eyes and singers,

11. And houris like red wine - their throats so smooth -
Who entertained us with flute and melody,

12. As if live coals were on their teeth when they smiled
And they swayed with a touch of shyness.

13. When the singing girls rose in the evening
They sang to us from the highest balconies.

14. You would see every accursed jealous one
Lying in wait who cannot attain his desires

15. Saying, "By God, this is life, not that
Which people have lived on crumbs all their days."

16. And I took as boon companions men who when inspired
Their gatherings were like brilliant stars,

17. Speaking of the Prophet's merit and his Companions
And his Followers - people of blessings,

18. And telling tales of truth about Qays and Ziyad and Daghfal
Which took away cares.

19. The old wine brought their cheerfulness
And their souls found joy and delight.

20. I love every singer and every tender-eyed one
Who turns his eyes away from my slips,

21. Although I am one who drinks wine and makes war,
With merit and achievements,

22. I am most content with kindness out of nobility
And inclination - I was loved without payment.

23. Drunk or sober I am forbearing - you will not see
Me angrily reproaching my companions.

24. But I take the death and destruction of enemies -
Foes do not feel safe from my assaults.

25. If not for three traits of the noble youth
And your life, I would not care about death:

26. One of them is half of glory in seeking the heights
When the talented boaster comes to me in verse;

27. Another leading the army in the night into battle
And striking off the head of the advancing enemy;

28. And third racing horses every evening
And hunting gazelles with she-hounds.

29. Truly, I am a horseman without peer - so of people
Some are loyal friends hoping for my gifts.

30. Every day they have favors from my munificence -
Most people of the time are treated kindly by me.

31. When the horrors of war come upon the people,
An onslaught that stops all people's donations,

32. And raging camels that I readied out of pride
Whose flesh falls off them from leanness,

33. And men whose heads are for my swords
And men whose skins are for my arrows.

34. By God, I pardon when pardon does not impair
The policy of a king regarding his brother's crimes.

35. There is no blame on one who repents sincerely -
How many slips people have!

36. If I spare or destroy, I have attained all
That I wanted regarding the disloyal and oath-breakers.

37. I opposed the nobles and glory still
Continues rising, reaching the highest ranks.

38. Pride is ours in Islam and in ignorance before it
And later in favors and victories.

39. We have a chapter recited by every king
And the plateau of glory is the highest plateau.

40. We surpassed earth's kings in glory and auspices
As the racing horse surpasses others in the track.

41. Nobility and high station are ours, and the rank
That ascended and reached the sky in kingship and firmness.

42. And were it not for us kings, my people, the hunt
Would not be established, by my life.

43. We struck down the children of Hagar in Islam
And they submitted, paid the alms-tax.

44. We wrested from them by force the religion just as
We wrested from them their property by force.

45. Ask the tribes about my steed on the day I attacked them
With a fiery, roaring, biting sword.

46. I struck the groups of people until I left them
Like outstretched hands, sleeping the sleep of death,

47. Not one of them but was a slain corpse
Whose flames the desert wolves gnawed,

48. Or another endlessly fleeing like a mange-stricken camel
Escaping on a steed when escape was possible.

49. So ask them at Resurrection on the day I assaulted them
With a burning, flaming, devouring sword.

50. When they were thrown into confusion and the swords gashed them,
I cloaked them in pardon and good deeds.

51. At al-Aqir I rent Amir's shoulder a rending
Which narrators recount in gatherings,

52. And ask about my striking on the day I pierced Hāsir
With my sword, and all my protectors fled.

53. At the well-known al-Miq'ad I stabbed 'Amir
At the moment of stabbing until my spear's shaft was bare.

54. I met them alone when helpers had fled
And his companions were like ostriches' cries.

55. I warded off the people with the spear, hoping
From God that I would avoid shameful deeds,

56. And how many famous battle I witnessed
In which a man falls short of my deeds!

57. No enemy army but I routed it,
No land but I raided it with forays

58. If I wished, a minister and servant were enough for me -
I did not throw myself into the hands of death

59. But my soul was not content except
To sacrifice itself for praise and plunges into peril.

60. My Lord showed me angry vengeance
And severity against enemies full of vengeance.

61. I say nothing except what I say -
If one of sure promise does not fulfill his word.

62. The life of religion, knowledge, and piety
And the glory of Oman entirely depends on my life.
