2. No, but they sympathized as I sympathized
And were afflicted as I was afflicted

3. If only they understood my sorrows
They would have wept for me over what made me weep

4. And they would have sighed as I sighed
And not been relieved as I was relieved

5. A tear flows down my cheek
I was sleepless, still not satisfied

6. If not for you, troubler of souls
I would not have raged nor poured out

7. So when doves cooed above the tree tops
I sang out my sorrows

8. And when the moon of sadness rose
In a desolate, ruined abode I cried

9. And I do flirt with a gazelle
And she knows what I mean

10. And I address the delicate branch
And do not disclose what I intended

11. And I speak of the supple sapling
Alluding to what I sought

12. And I long for the shining moon
But it is you I desire

13. And I say "O sun of happiness!"
But it is you I seek

14. I did not know what passion was
Or love until I was afflicted

15. So I reaped the fruits of sorrow
From love while I gathered

The day I saw my beloved

17. Eyes and rest that we delighted in

When I went on a pleasure trip with my companions

And entertained

Whose stories I enjoyed

33. The generosity of a king I preceded
And never stumbled or fell

34. And I am generous when intoxicated
And do not slacken when sober

35. And indeed a well-endowed busty beauty
Clings to me and hugs me

36. And horsemen who overcome archers
I commanded and they obeyed and rallied around me

37. And nimble gazelles who talk of wildlife
I protected from being speared or defended

38. I sheathed my sword in the archers
And soaked its edge until satisfied

39. And I lodged my spear in the kidneys
Until it was crushed to pieces

40. I do not delay when called
Nor hesitate when I see

41. I am the same in my generosity
Whether close or keeping away

42. My sword strikes as I command
And it may hold back when I forbid

43. And so destiny rules people
According to what I decree

44. And victory accompanies my flag
Whether I intend a long stay or a raid

45. O you who pulls me to vain things
Do not blame me for what I built

46. Or leave me be, for I am eminent
Atop its platforms I ascended

47. I have spent generously what I gained
And gained so I may be praised

48. People may pardon kings
But I do not pardon what I contain

49. No, I have not risen so high
And the rough terrain I did not ascend
