1. You have the strength to bear burdens for your mother,
Yet you lack the strength to bear your own piety.
١. تقوى على الإم والأوزار تحملُها
ولست تقوى على تقواك محتمَلا
2. How deeply you have delved into self-conceit,
Cloaked in ignorance and vain hopes far worse than it.
٢. وكم توَغّلتَ في الإعجاب مشتملا
بالجهل والحلم أسنى منه مشتمَلا
3. Whoever desires safety tomorrow from what he reaps today
Should not wear a garment of heedlessness in his time.
٣. من شاء في غدهِ ممّا جنى سلماً
فلا يعف لابساً في يومه سملا
4. I became disinterested in asceticism, fooled by the transience
Of its external features, and instead held onto greed and hopes.
٤. زهدت في الزهد مغتَرّا بفانيةٍ
أعراضُها وعلقت الحرص والأملا
5. Had I turned away from character faults and deafened myself
To the people's knowledge and deeds, I'd have found perfection.
٥. ولو أنفت من الأوصاف واصمَها
عند الأنام ألفت العلم والعمَلا
6. O shepherd of wealth and family, striving
To avert harm, there is room for the flock and the strays.
٦. يا راعيَ المال والأهلين مجتهدا
صرف الردى يسع المرعيّ والهمَلا
7. Happy is he who makes his worldly duties subordinate
To his faith, decreasing them to attain complete satisfaction.
٧. طوبى لمن دان دنياه بواجبَها
تنقّصا وابتفى فيها الرضى كمَلا
8. When the drunkard contemplates the agony of the sinners tomorrow,
He will fear neither intoxication, nor sin, nor anguish.
٨. إذا تأمّل سكر المجرمين غداً
لم يخش سكرا بإجرام ولا ثمَلا
