لمن الشموس عزيزة الأحداج

1. For whom are the radiant suns with slender waists,
Rising between the myrtle and brocade?

١. لِمَنِ الشُموسُ عَزيزَةَ الأَحداجِ
يَطلُعنَ بَينَ الوَشيِ وَالديباجِ

2. Each surpasses in beauty like a doll
Of pearl that has been carved from ivory.

٢. مِن كُلِّ فائِقَةِ الجَمالِ كَدُميَةٍ
مِن لُؤلُؤٍ قَد صُوِّرَت في عاجِ

3. She walks and sways in clothes as though
A branch swaying gently amidst fragile china.

٣. تَمشي وَتَرفُلُ في الثِيابِ كَأَنَّه
غُصنٌ تَرَنَّحَ في نَقاً رَجراجِ

4. Girdled with belts and sashes about their waists,
Walking with such grace and charm.

٤. حَفَّت بِهِنَّ مَناصِلٌ وَذَوابِلٌ
وَمَشَت بِهِنَّ ذَوامِلٌ وَنَواجي

5. In them the slender waists as though
Ships with sails billowing on the waves.

٥. فيهِنَّ هَيفاءُ القَوامِ كَأَنَّه
فُلكٌ مُشَرَّعَةٌ عَلى الأَمواجِ

6. Darkness stole like a thief strands of his hair,
As though night coupled with the gloom.

٦. خَطَفَ الظَلامُ كَسارِقٍ مِن شَعرِه
فَكَأَنَّما قَرَنَ الدُجى بِدَياجي

7. I looked and then I fell, but kept it hidden,
I met but my confidant knew nothing of it.

٧. أَبصَرتُ ثُمَّ هَوَيتُ ثُمَّ كَتَمتُ م
أَلقى وَلَم يَعلَم بِذاكَ مُناجي

8. And so I attained but measured myself, and restrained
An honor that led me to perfection.

٨. فَوَصَلتُ ثُمَّ قَدَرتُ ثُمَّ عَفَفتُ مِن
شَرَفٍ تَناهى بي إِلى الإِنضاجِ
