1. The near is far, the sought is out of reach,
Events and misfortunes have turned you away.
١. بَعُدَ القَريبُ وَأَعوَزَ المَطلوبُ
وَعَدَتكَ عَنهُ حَوادِثٌ وَخُطوبُ
2. You've suffered without your beloved, blamed
By one who wonders that a sad one should grieve.
٢. وَمُنيتَ مِن بُعدِ الحَبيبِ بِعاذِلٍ
يَلحى وَيَعجَبُ أَن يَحِنَّ كَئيبُ
3. They said, "His lover mistreated him," and I replied,
"Even when the beloved is cruel, he's still the beloved."
٣. قالوا أَساءَ حَبيبُهُ فَأَجَبتُهُم
إِنَّ الحَبيبَ وَإِن أَساءَ حَبيبُ
4. The lover, though settled among his own people,
Is a stranger, if his beloved is not with him.
٤. إِنَّ المُحِبَّ وَإِن أَقامَ بِأَهلِهِ
ما لَم يَكُن فيمَن يُحِبُّ غَريبُ
