1. O one I loved before you
When will your visit be?

2. When I call for you, my plight -
O master, does not trouble thee.

3. My share of you is little now,
And little is your share of me.

4. Misfortunes came to me today -
Remember misfortunes troubling thee,

5. And misfortunes were lowered on me
Where your fortunes used to be.

6. Your faults are my faults too,
And my faults do trouble thee.

7. Today I have a guest with me
Whose weeping troubles thee.

8. Of emaciated men not one
Can cure you of their company,

9. And I have here no wine for you
How can your love be quenched by me?

10. If you find for me no young she-camel
My Lord God suffices thee.

11. Of wine the best wine that I have
Is raisins here with me.

12. My soul said when you rode far
From the passion it has for thee:

13. “Leave what makes you doubtful and go
To that which has no doubt in thee,

14. Had he been good who loves you
Or feels desire come over he,

15. He would have answered your call but
I think he will not answer thee.”

16. So I said: “O heart do not lie to me
about him or your lies trouble me.

17. The boy is of noble birth
And his nobility is plain to see.

18. Nothing is accomplished while
Your watcher sleeps forgetfully.”

19. So I said: “I was wrong until
Your wise counsel turned towards me.”

20. He said: “Describe him to me,
For I will answer when you describe to me.”

21. But I succeeded not in describing
Anything in which his faults could be.

22. I seek God’s forgiveness but
A nose upon which you ride is he.
