1. Sweet in speech and beautiful when angered
His promises marred by lies

2. Fickle in loyalty to his loved ones
Who suffer from his fickleness and toil

3. The sword of youth made me drunk
And the night fled in fear

4. With a drink, when aged by the cup
Water crowns it with seeds of love

5. So it reconciled me with time
And replaced my worries with joy

6. For life is only for the heedless
Whose shamelessness remains unruly

7. He seeks all he desires
Undeterred if refused and unmoved

8. And gives freely what his palm contained
Not regretting what he had given

9. How much silver spent in a day of joy
And how much gold that is gone

10. There is no game but with a falcon
That flies on four wings like a dance

11. If unleashed from its anklet
The dust swirling, the hunt begins

12. A whirlwind from the winds’ daughters
Shows you wonders on earth

13. It clasps its prey to its chest
Like a lover embracing the loved

14. Many a day for it is blameless
Spilling blood, causing confusion

15. It sits where the rider would be
Like a Turkish woman taken captive by Arabs

16. Its eyeliner a question, its antimony
Stripped bare of gold

17. The meat of beasts in the wilderness
On ember, plundered hastily

18. Their cups circulate, mixing
The water of valleys with grapes’ daughters

19. They rouse the remorseful with a goblet
In which the afflicted is consoled when it passes

20. They went intoxicated, in hand the wine
Revived from the shackles of toil

21. To a circle with narcissus floor
And cords of its tents fluttering

22. Its walls are sheets of camphor
Its ceiling aflame with gold

23. O its beauty! O imam of guidance
Best of successors, in self and father

24. When seated on the throne
His temples bound by the crown

25. He enjoys such enjoyment
See how its attainment is playful

26. Most clement in consent
Most merciful in wrath

How often he forgave and reprieved

28. One resigned, his heart fluttering
Death peered at him

29. From the bed’s edge, almost pouncing
Since his cradle he remained

30. Perfect and suited to highest office
As if we see the unseen in his matter

31. With eyes of assumption never wrong
We beseech God to let him rule

32. And hasten time to what we love
In dreams, visions show

33. What we desire, removing distress
Good tidings from the Lord came to us

34. Inciting thanks owed
Until the oath of allegiance called him

35. How many slaves were freed, vows made
You inherited the caliphate from your father

36. Seizing his inheritance vigilantly

37. You did not withhold it from the deserving
Nor did an arrow of chance hit you
