1. O you who makes promises of favors
Yet withdraws when I ask, where is the promise?
١. يا مَن يَجودُ بِمَوعِدٍ مِن حَظِّهِ
وَيَصُدُّ حينَ أَقولُ أَينَ المَوعِدُ
2. Modesty's dyer stays blushing in his cheek
Tired, at times turning yellow, at others turning red
٢. وَيَظَلُّ صَبّاغُ الحَياءِ بِخَدِّهِ
تَعِباً يُعَصفِرُ تارَةً وَيُوَرِّدُ
3. What harm would it do you to console a lover
Restless, roused and rested by his passion for you?
٣. ماذا يَضُرُّكَ لَو رَثيتَ لِعاشِقٍ
قَلَقٍ يَقومُ بِهِ هَواكَ وَيَقعُدُ
4. Eyes find their sleep and his sleep
Till dawn a pleasure not to be found
٤. تَجِدُ العُيونُ رُقادَها وَرُقادَهُ
حَتّى الصَباحِ مَسَرَّةٌ لا توجَدُ
5. And when the hated night grows short for him
He has a long-lived night that has no end
٥. وَلَهُ إِذا ما قَصَّرَ اللَيلُ الكَرى
لَيلٌ طَويلُ العُمرِ aلَيسَ لَهُ يَدُ
