ومشمولة قد طال بالقفص حبسها

1. Imprisoned for so long, her cage was cramped,
She told of Abraham's fire in hue and chill.

١. وَمَشمولَةٍ قَد طالَ بِالقَفصِ حَبسُها
حَكَت نارَ إِبراهيمَ في اللَونِ وَالبَردِ

2. We lowered ourselves to her veil after sleepiness,
The saddles of steeds that spent their day pacing.

٢. حَطَطنا إِلى خَمّارِها بَعدَ هَجعَةٍ
رِحالَ مَطايا لَم تَزَل يَومَها تَخدي

3. Kings in the bloom of youth showed humility
Swearing by no blame or praise in it.

٣. مُلوكٌ لِلَذّاتِ الشَبابِ تَواضَعوا
وَلَم يَحلِفوا فيها بِذَمٍّ وَلا حَمدِ

4. They spent nights by the wine-seller in a tavern,
Emptying palaces in the suburbs and burbs.

٤. فَباتوا لَدى الخُمارِ في بَيتِ حانَةٍ
وَأَخلوا قُصوراً بِالرُصافَةِ وَالحَدِّ

5. Continuing at the wine-skins was one
With a belt, sweet of glance and stature.

٥. وَدامَ عَلَيهُم بِالمُدامِ مُمَنطَقٌ
بِزُنّارِهِ حُلو الشَمائِلِ وَالقَدِ

6. He pours the wine's draft in a goblet
That glows on his right like a lone star.

٦. يَمُجُّ سُلافَ الخَمرِ في عَسجَديَّةٍ
تَوَهُّجُ في يُمناهُ كَالكَوكَبِ الفَردِ

7. Engraved on it figures of a horseman
And Khusraw surrounded by torn raiments of soldiers.

٧. مُحَفَّرَةٍ فيها تَصاويرُ فارِسٍ
وَكِسرى غَريقٌ حَولُهُ خِرَقُ الجُندِ
