1. I am known to God in many hues
Merciful, devilish, and human too

2. To some people thus, and others so
Depending on the intentions of my brethren

3. I have no intrinsic description whatsoever
No attribute, condition or state

4. But however I may be, my friend
You see in me partnership and faith

5. My Lord was revealed to the sincere folk
A recitation and Qur’an when invoked

6. And He willed to reveal me to a people
Corrupt, troubled, and deprived

7. I have no doing, nor does anyone
All doing is for the Master, as they profess

8. To some my words are pure truth
While others think this speech is madness

9. The musk-scented breeze the clogged nose knows not
As do the blind miss the light of the sun

10. O you who deny me, beware of me
For spirits have found rest and faith in me

11. Cease speaking ill of me, desist
Behind me stand allies, bold for God

12. Behind me all who sell when outstretched
No human or jinn remains

13. Swords polished, spears raised
Long, warriors striking and stabbing

14. These are my stages wherein I have dwellings
None knows save those given gnosis

15. O people! How long this life in ignorance?
Is there no assent among you to the true religion?

16. A ruler has greyed amid the common folk
Nor repented of sins and disobedience

17. And when the wine of this world intoxicated you
You were blinded to the reverent piety of the Merciful

18. So your piety in the world was spoiled
Deceit upon the truth and falsehood

19. While in God’s eyes you are disgraced though the world
Deems the men of God as fools

20. If you fear your Lord, whose sin causes
Him to show you that sin but Satan?

21. If you aim to implement His Law justly
For the likes of me a balance has arisen

22. While you in your passion do as you please
Falsehood, fraud, and hypocrisy between you

23. A believer’s rights are violated easier than
Your gravest sins against God’s rights

24. You make public the honor of whoever does not agree
To the hypocrisy you live by, so he fails

25. You adorned your sayings by which ancient men were duped
With insults against me, and youths

26. May God protect my heart from your goading
And protect me from hearkening to this
