1. I am the Kaaba, to which all meanings
Make pilgrimage without hesitation.

2. And so do the perfections that
Will ever suffer without me.

3. How much knowledge has circumambulated me,
Kissing the Black Stone of the tongue,

4. And come to my Arafat, standing
To seek my explanation.

5. O One, neither in the eyes
Nor in the unseen is there a second to You.

6. I am Your broken eyelid, O my eyes,
And from You comes the mending.

7. So beauty comes in this,
And in the maidens of Paradise.

8. Arise for the wine, O brother of passion,
And go round us at every moment.

9. And run to bring the wine of holiness
From the forms of the wilderness in my jugs.

10. And drink with me at the hand of the server—
How good are the hands of the beautiful!

11. And enter the church whose monastery,
And devote yourself to the daughter of the grape.

12. Stripped of all that distracts you
From these vanishing ones.

13. Get drunk with it, with every chewer
Of carnations that sways like a bough.

14. And listen to your entrails
Recited in the voice of entrails.

15. And leave fools to their opinions of you
At every moment.

16. And know that you lead not
Those you love for all time.

17. Shall I make the deaf hear, they who
Are enthralled by their living?

18. Or guide the blind from the disgrace
And misery of misguidance?

19. Do you want to guide a people
Whose hearts are those of cowards?

20. Take what is pure for you among them
And leave them the turbid vessels.

21. And go down to them, do not burden them
To the highest places.

22. And perhaps they will turn back. Do not
Deny them the heart of insight.
