1. Tell the worshippers of fantasy,
How much falsehood in their delusions!

2. You worship an imagined God,
Devoid of reason and transcendence.

3. He is conceived by the intellect,
An idea that came to your mind.

4. You reached Him through flimsy proofs,
Chief among the arguments of men.

5. The predecessors disputed Him,
With the Mu'tazilites in contention,

6. With fanciful notions,
Idols of metaphor,

7. Images, thoughts,
Empty words and babble.

8. Without the hearing of Him, His true form,
Is sheer misguidance,

9. His origin is reason, His conception
Is like shackles binding you.

10. O people, restrain your minds,
From that Exalted Lord,

11. By your faulty reasoning you have worshipped
The offspring of the wavering mind.

12. You claimed Him divine in false pretense,
While He is exalted above such notions.

13. He was not begotten as you claimed,
As stated clearly in the verses.

14. However you wish to conceive your Lord,
The Master of all masters.

15. Woe to the man who confides
In a contingent form!

16. Worshipping the God in his mind,
Unconcerned with reality.

17. If you say: Your Lord is in the mountains,
The lands, the heavens and gardens,

18. In people and jinn,
In angels swift and able,

19. In birds and ants,
In horses and camels,

20. In all creation, nights and days,
All this was made by the Lord,

21. Manifest in His works,
Revealing through His creatures,

22. Transcendent in every case.
He denies and rejects what you said,

23. Seeking contention:
Exalted is God above what you say,

24. O son of carnality!
All this is mere creation, you say,

25. Announcing it proudly!
Glorious is my Lord, transcending

26. Such limitations!
God is only in my reason,

27. And my imagination.
I've known Him since my early days.

28. The ignorant man knows not that God
Manifests Himself to the sincere.

29. Apparent in everything,
Nothing is hidden from Him.

30. He is the Truth, all elseillusion, a mirage.
Abraham said: I have turned my face

31. In supplication, to the One
Who created the earth through His acts,

32. And likewise the Companions of the Cave,
Their words most profound:

33. Our Lord, Lord of the mighty seven heavens.
So did the prophets and the saints,

34. The people of perfection.
None worshipped with their reason

35. A contingent Lord.
They worshipped the Lord of the abodes,

36. And the crescent moon.
To Him belongs the morning sun,

37. Created, contingent.
Creator of all lands,

38. To the right and left.
Creator of above and below,

39. And all that lies between.
Creator of air, water and

40. Raging fire when kindled.
Apparent in all things,

41. Nothing devoid of Him.
Then all things perish in Him,

42. Consumed and extinguished.
Recite the Quran and understand it,

43. Speak not of it ignorantly.
Leave reason to the people

44. Of torment and misery.
They understand religion through it,

45. With tricks and illusions.
This is not the religion of my Lord,

46. It is despicable and vile.
His true religion is glory and beauty,

47. Its rulings of lawful and prohibited.
One who turns away heedlessly,

48. Busy with status or wealth,
Or passion for singing girls,

49. Seduced and deprived.
No share for him from God,

50. No sweet union.
Only distance, like counting sand grains.
