1. I am not the one I love, though my eye,
Should it be lost, is entirely his.

2. And my annihilation, that I am of him,
His eternal attributes have indicated.

3. And if I become annihilated, I am nothing,
According to our Lord's most sacred verses.

4. And my annihilation is but to return
To an eternal knowledge in an everlasting presence.

5. And my existence, which you see as my existence,
Is, according to the ancient maxim, merely imaginary.

6. It is God saying "Be!" and it becomes—
Nothing—whatever He wills in creation.

7. O sole Real Existence, You have no second,
Except that we are Your unreal manifestations.

8. You have in us a presence You have spoken of:
"I am with you,"—a most luminous degree.

9. However You desire, You are with me and others,
Outwardly apparent to fanciful perceptions.

10. And to You belongs the command, not to us, and from You
Comes judgment regarding each deed and intention.

11. And in every state we are in,
Its lawful rules are necessitated for us.

12. If we wake from the intoxication of union—but if
We are intoxicated—the intoxication veils awareness.

13. It is a state that befalls those sincere among us,
Not hidden from pure souls.
