1. If you are not pleased with yourself,
Then you are of my kind and race.

2. For my soul does not see itself
Except in wickedness and vileness.

3. All its attributes are blameworthy,
And it is the opposite of obedience.

4. That is why it remains in ignorance,
Never leaving confusion and doubt.

5. But it has a pure spirit
That becomes good morning and evening

6. By the command of my Lord, wholly obedient
To His command, through reason and sense.

7. Noble are its attributes that bespeak
The goodness of pure, wholesome origin.

8. So the spirit is lofty while the soul remains
In baseness until the day it perishes.

9. Like the husk and the core, or the sun and
Its rays, so look to the sun!

10. And the servant is attributed now to this, now to that
In the absolute rise and fall.

11. At times the highest self prevails
And the defeated rejoices in intimacy.

12. What was hidden appears through it,
So the Throne and Chair are manifested.

13. And at times the one prevails
That in its ignorance sinks into illusion and fancy,

14. So the defeated wakes in desolation
From its affairs, though clad by them.

15. Now one state, now the other, such is the way
Of Him whose perfection is endless.

16. An inherited knowledge that accomplished
Transcendence of the universe's letters.
