1. I am the Manifest Light though I veil my name,
The Revelation makes me known, understand my strain!

2. By me does God lead multitudes astray,
And by me guide multitudes, so try to ascertain me!

3. But none go astray save foolish souls
Who disbelieve, nurse enmity and entertain suspicion.

4. I am the King, the Kingdom too, transcending all,
I am the boulder midst the valley; lo, I am He!

5. When I was part of Him, not sundered,
Nor joined, I witnessed all things in me.

6. I fulfill whom I will by the science of my truth,
And whom I will, I make drunk with the wine of my nearness.

7. I make some happy by union, others I torment
By separation and aloofness.

8. My station cannot be attained by yearning,
Nor my state grasped by longing.

9. The door of gifts and bounties is not barred
Against the people of praise.

10. But the hearts have thereon
Veils which bar all approach.

11. By pure unity everything is known,
While by duality all remains unknown.

12. All gates are shut save my gate,
So cease this vain babbling!

13. I am no poet, and all my poems
Are far removed from a singer's lays.

14. Distinguish between inspiration and poetry,
Express the place clearly, do not hint!

15. Do not disbelieve, in your ignorance, my discourse,
Leave it for those who profess pure unity.

16. Do not hastily judge what you do not know,
For in time you will come to know with deliberation.

17. I have given you advice, so show patience with me
If you follow the Sunni path of guidance.

18. Come, let us transcend all branches
And avoid marrying and adopting children.

19. Each youth is content with the water
Measured out for him by the Giver to drink.

20. When I spoke thereof, all the men of this age
Bore witness truly concerning me.
