1. Those I adore have abandoned me
So I lament the ruins and our past

2. And deceive the heart that accompanied them
Deceiving those who parted from us

3. Ask about the sweetness of life, for I
Have become neither a heart nor a home

4. Do not say I hope for return, for how many
After distance drew near

5. It is an era that was heedless
Of you, and now is aware

6. Neighbors, by Allah, after them
I did not find beauty or connection

7. They took my soul, if only they
Compensated me with their return

8. And knew that I die for them
So dress me in longing as my shroud

9. No blame upon the rash lover for them
If he detains the body

10. Perhaps a soul hanging upon them
Will remember the homeland

11. I said to the shining moon when
The one I nurtured disappeared

12. Wane or rise if you wish, for you
Cannot substitute for the one I lost

13. The sun told me of him and of
Its full moon when it set and we met

14. We were equals in nobility
But fate struck the best of us

15. And I asked the sand after them
Did a breeze tilt a branch

16. Or a doe with a slender neck
That evokes sadness walked upon it

17. Or did the night rain fall on it
As it lay, so it bent its branches?

18. The breeze said to me: That withdrew
When they left and the clouds pulled away

19. And the bright eyes grew bleary
And the singing leaves turned from us

20. So when we weary, there is no joy
For we leaves, it is for us to bend

21. My masters, is there after you
A return of days to unite us?

22. I hope, though despair mocks me
That fate will bring us together again

23. And the madness of love deserted me
With you, after death, some comfort

24. If sorrow passes by confused for me
For I lost beloveds and so I am

25. May every downpour give you to drink
Tears from me, shaming the rainclouds
