1. I know not my guile, nor what I own,
When my hopes appear, my deeds are shown,

2. By God, I'm shackled in captivity,
My sins have fettered and chained me fully.

3. My time's too short my shackles to undo,
Or lighten the load that weighs me through and through.

4. Ready I am, if death should call,
To part, though dear to me is life withal.

5. Eighty years gone and still,
Disease assails me, frail against its will,

6. Whene'er my will resolves, my faith grows bold,
Alas, frail health makes my resolve fold.

7. Despair almost ended me, but hope,
Extended its rope and scope,

8. So between hope and despair I dwell,
From state to state, and trial to trial fell.

9. I wonder what my answer will be,
When prolonged is my reckoning's day,

10. No answer have I, God knows,
But my admission of guilt, I hope,

11. Of what use is this admission of mine?
When my actions contradict all I opine.

12. What plea have I, when well I know,
My sins, the least, like mountains show?

13. Would that I'd died before this day,
Borne not what I cannot bear or allay.

14. Naught is left, but good faith in The Clement,
To whom my return is eminent.

15. Accept repentance, pardon white hair,
Forgive sins, Oh Lord of Exaltation and Might.

16. I trust in Your grace and rank sublime,
Of the Messenger of God, till judgment time.

17. Many through the Prophet's grace were saved,
On their day of reckoning, from harm and loss.

18. Without the Intercessor, I'd have thought, deliverance was naught.
Through him alone, I hope to triumph, and win the race,

19. By the best of mankind, the noble and high.
The prophet of miracles, like the she-wolf speech,

20. And the doe's, announcing the deer and gazelle.
The camel and camel mare's complaint of hunger and frailness,

21. Came to him, he split a date and its ripeness,
At his birth, Kisra's fire dimmed,

22. A thousand proofs, of its kindling.
And so too the Iwan cracked and collapsed,

23. Balconies that towered so high.
Bahira saw him in the caravan, the sun upon the people,

24. While he, in shade, walked tall.
A cloud shaded him, inclining right and left,

25. Sheltering him completely in its keep.
He asked about his character, searching deeper,

26. Though much was hidden beyond his inquiry.
He called upon his uncle, and said return with your son,

27. Fearing for him harm anddanger.
He's the best of men, of glorious lineage,

28. Chosen and prepared to be sent.
The seal of prophets, by whom God ascended,

29. Increasing his perfection and renown.
He journeyed, nearing twice a bow's length or closer,

30. What a night it was, beyond all nights!
God secured a nation, among whom,

31. Some harmed him, as noted in the spoils.
And granted him victory in Badr the great,

32. Assigning angels to oversee the battle.
Many a disbeliever fell dead,

33. Unmourned by beasts or birds of prey.
Then dragged to a well, a sign and lesson,

34. In their death and ignoble decay.
And so too in Hunain, the armies of disbelief massed,

35. Like a torrent roaring wild.
The swords flashed like lightning in the storm,

36. Appearing through clouds of arrows hailed.
He pelted them with a mere handful of earth,

37. Reduced to ostrich-like weakness and frailness.
Turning to flee the blow, abandoning,

38. The precincts of home and possessions to pillage.
Much did the women suffer at their hands,

39. When they sought refuge with The Giving and Grace.
From his blessed fingers, water flowed forth,

40. Barely a drop, quenching the army's thirst.
They drank their fill, the sky shaded,

41. Without resting upon their mounts.
Like the breast of Umm Ma'bad,

42. Emaciated, weak and stark.
At his touch, her breast filled,

43. Flowing freely, swift and long.
Quenching people, lasting still,

44. No trace of dryness, the flow was strong.
Who thinks to measure his virtues in verse?

45. Seeks the impossible, like counting sand and pebbles!
A drop of water indicates, the successive flow,

46. Were verses like stars strewn in the night sky.
The poet's capability cannot match those lofty qualities,

47. However hard he strives, and long.
Whenever I think to pursue,

48. I'm held back by inability, my state is wrong.
My God, I have only Your perfect grace,

49. In my settling and travel, no other place.
In life and death, let me not detach,

50. For by it, my ties are latched.
Accept the intercession of the Chosen One,

51. For through him, is my hope of salvation won.
Bless his family and companions, one and all,

52. The best of company and kin.
Since the first star glimmered, lightning flashed,

53. And breeze stirred wayward coats.
