1. He brought us bread so sour
Like coins in its ruggedness
١. أَتانا بِخُبزٍ لَهُ حامِضٍ
شَبيهِ الدَراهِمِ في حِليَتِه
2. Its taste makes the eater grimace
And sticks in the throat with its coarseness
٢. يُضَرِّسُ آكِلَهُ طَعمُهُ
وَيَنشَبُ في الحَلقِ مِن خُشنَتِهَ
3. If you breathe near the loaf
It floats in the house, so light
٣. إِذا ما تَنَفَّستَ عِندَ الخِوانِ
تَطايَرَ في البَيتِ مِن خِفَّتِه
4. So we all sit together
Avoiding breaths in our fright
٤. فَنَحنُ جُلوسٌ مَعاً كُلُّنا
نُداري التَنَفُّسَ مِن خَشيَتِه
