While yesterday man lived at ease, self-indulgent,

وبينما المرء أمس ناعما جذلا

1. While yesterday man lived at ease, self-indulgent,
Enjoying life, surrounded by his family,

١. وَبَينَما المَرءُ أَمسَ ناعِماً جَذِلاً
في أَهلِهِ مُعجَباً بِالعَيشِ ذا أَنَقِ

2. Suddenly he was given a glimpse of his mortality,
And no sooner had this occurred than he breathed his last like a lightning bolt.

٢. غِرّاً أُتيحَ لَهُ مِن حَينِهِ عَرَضٌ
فَما تَلَبَّثَ حَتّى ماتَ كَالصَعِقِ

3. Then at daybreak he became a lifeless form, devoid of soul or breath,
Shrouded in the darkness of the grave.

٣. ثُمَّتَ أَضحى ضُحىً مِن غِبِّ ثالِثَةٍ
مُقَنَّعاً غَيرَ ذي روحٍ وَلا رَمَقِ

4. He is mourned and carried to a tomb
Whose sides are plastered with earth and stones.

٤. يُبكى عَلَيهِ وَأَدنوهُ لِمُظلِمَةٍ
تُعلى جَوانِبُها بِالتُربِ وَالفِلَقِ

5. Of all he had gathered he took nothing with him
Except a shroud and the rags that covered his nakedness.

٥. فَما تَزَوَّدَ مِمّا كانَ يَجمَعُهُ
إِلّا حَنوطاً وَما واراهُ مِن خِرَقِ

6. And nothing to sustain him on his journey
Except the pungent smoke of burning wood.

٦. وَغَيرَ نَفحَةِ أَعوادٍ تُشَبُّ لَهُ
وَقَلَّ ذَلِكَ مِن زادٍ لِمُنطَلِقِ

7. How meager are the provisions for the departing soul!
I pray God forgives me for past sins,

٧. أَستَغفِرُ اللَهَ أَعمالي الَّتي سَلَفَت
مِن عَثرَةٍ إِن يُعاقِبني بِها أَبِقِ

8. For if He punishes me for them I shall be lost.
In whatever town death takes him,

٨. بِأَيِّما بَلدَةٍ كانَت مَنِيَّتُهُ
إِن لا يَسِرطائِعاً في قَصدِها يُسَقِ
