1. Your tomb has become the abode of forgiveness,
And a place of pilgrimage for the angels of the Most Merciful.

2. The All-Powerful revived a spirit from you when you ascended,
You were brought to life by that spirit and sweet basil.

3. You assumed rooms in the Gardens and were married
To the fairest maidens as a reward for your righteousness.

4. You were greeted and brought gifts from the Gardens
By the hand of Ridwan.

5. Its angels rejoiced at your arrival,
And Ridwan rushed to welcome you.

6. The houris of the Gardens longed for your spirit
Loving it as children do.

7. The world was your first abode,
And the Highest Paradise your second.

8. After you, O Ali, there is nothing in creation
Fairer in my discerning and seeing eye.

9. I weep for the institute which has wearied me,
And the place of your repose which makes me weep.

10. A grave over which there is an awe of knowledge
Visible, and the intimacy of reciting the Qur'an can be sensed.

11. I called out to it and it responded to me with its knowledge,
Happy, as if it had called out to me.

12. When the manifestations of poverty and deprivation are feared,
Who has the ways and gifts?

13. The schools of knowledge which have become
Like the axes of buildings.

14. After there had been within its spheres
A sun pointed out by every builder.

15. It disdains to answer, so reverence does not return,
And the questioners hang their heads.

16. Nothing difficult crossed its bridge unless
Good deeds became weighty for it in the Scale.

17. In my state, following the Law and guidance,
A sword against the offender and a meadow for the penitent.

18. If a peer deliberates, we say thus:
Let the peers act towards peers in this way.

19. If I apply his extracted learnings,
Humanity would acknowledge it completely.

20. How many doubts donned the garb of night,
Which he dispelled like the dawn with proof.

21. I weep for you on the day when two adversaries disputed
A confusing matter, bewildering them both.

22. O Sun, the night has lasted long after your setting,
How can morning come when you lie in your grave?

23. O Second of the two dawns! Nay, O Third of the two full moons!
Nay, O One of all times!

24. What is new in time passes, while our sorrow
Remains, enduring as transient time.

25. Stop at the graves and call into them mournfully,
"Who is distracted from preparation?"

26. Where are those who, when they consulted closely,
Assumed the highest rank and position?

27. A people, when they attended his councils of knowledge,
Their turbans judging the crowns.

28. Arise weeping, sighing, recalling
This tribulation which has befallen the Godly man.

29. His death in Egypt had a greater impact
Than events in all other lands.

30. An inkwell whose stature in Syria
Brought hostility razing Harran.

31. The post conveyed news of his death, so listen!
The deaf are superior to those with ears.

32. I find it hard to compose an elegy for one
Whose praise was always my task.

33. I present to him the sweet scent of a greeting
From his servant, the judge, the humble petitioner.

34. And I visit the earth of his grave continuously
With tears and laments.

35. A grave which when you kiss its soil
The breaths recognise the scent of Paradise.

36. God's pardon still pervades its corners,
Sheltering clouds perpetually gather there.
