1. Yes, the death of Jamal al-Din took away the sublime virtues,
The passing of the chief of nobles was a great loss.

2. None can take Abd al-Rahim's place,
No noble one is left like him.

3. The faces of jurisprudence lost their beauty,
Their lofty peaks lowered to the ground.

4. Today, the path of this school of thought is deserted by its travelers,
Even if protected by spears and shields.

5. This year witnessed the loss of a scholar,
Whose words none can match.

6. Tell us, who can take his place?
Who now can satisfy a seeker?

7. Tell us, who can stop an oppressor,
And reward every competitor in the arena?

8. Tell us, is there anyone similar to him?
Tell us, is there anyone comparable?

9. He strove tirelessly in the ocean of knowledge,
With steadfast determination, not lazily.

10. He excelled in debate with eloquent speech,
Leaving no argument for any speaker.

11. His swords in discourse cut through perplexity
With their essence, needing no sharpening.

12. He guided the confused, the student, the inquirer,
Maturing issues with wisdom.

13. He gathered scattered benefits with struggle,
Pursuing them seriously, not jesting.

14. Death folded the Shafi'i jurist of the times,
After him, who can find a replacement?

15. Since she saw him as the best son of virtue,
She nurtured him at her bountiful breast.

16. He clarified the unseen with his explanations,
Safe from Babylon's sorcery in his descriptions.

17. His footing in jurisprudence was pioneering,
Beyond what any barefoot or slippered being can attain.

18. Blessed is He who granted him such rank,
To which any disputant would admit his virtue.

19. How much that was novel did he reveal!
And manifest unique legal points!

20. How many nights he spent as if to catch
Rare blossoms in his nets!

21. His prolific writings have bound the devout,
He compiled from them whatever is hard to obtain.

22. His eloquent words are sweetly seasoned,
He did not deviate in the two states beyond what destiny dictated.

23. Much jurisprudence has passed away into the soil,
And tremendous amounts of dust settled upon it.

24. The world is unrecognizable, but it is known
By the fragrance of his perfected virtues.

25. The pages were only torn unwillingly
Due to the loss of the best fingers.

26. How many schools put on the clothes of mourning,
For the ink that flowed into a silken grave!

27. He was unmatched in his care for the companions.
Leave off the words of the foolish sycophant.

28. His inheritance included the Prophet’s heritage,
And he truly gained his share, not deficient.

29. He is the star, but a perfect full moon,
Though he is the morning sun in fairness.

30. His hometown of Isnā gained distinction,
And his home in eternity is the loftiest abode.

31. If the transmitted reports are sealed,
Then do not listen to any transmitter after him.

32. He was truthful in tracing reports, a verifier,
Far above those vain reports.

33. His eloquent lectures were so clear -
Leave those whose lectures contain flaws.

34. He performed knowledge’s duties to humanity,
And issued judgments with optional acts of worship.

35. He taught the texts of al-Shafi’i,
And defended him against every opponent.

36. His knowledge contained the scholars, generosity, piety,
And excelling in these traits came naturally to him.

37. He was the star from the horizon of knowledge who fell,
Returning the full moons to darkness.

38. He was the solid mountain whose pillar cracked,
Causing the earth to quake with tremors.

39. Who feels at ease hearing his words,
When he issues legal rulings on complex issues?

40. Though death has laid him to rest,
His star after him does not set.

41. O scholar, you taught people the virtues of early pious scholars,
Fulfilling the important tasks, O best sponsor.

42. You taught the world until wisdom was refined,
Not distracted from its affairs by trifles.

43. You brought out hidden gems for humanity,
For you are an ocean with no shallows.

44. You clarified the ambiguous for people in elucidation,
None sees flaws in its beauty.

45. If you gathered the scholars in councils,
Your lofty riddles would be the assemblies’ crown.

46. Your legal differences, O brilliant synthesizer,
Baffle the minds of similar men.

47. Your writings with guidance clear as proof,
Make other gardens seem barren.

48. Recited, they spare one hearing nightingales,
Understood, they guide the lost wandering in ignorance.

49. They purely seek right, guiding the perplexed,
Saving them from floundering in desolate places.

50. You set aside a portion in legal theory,
Making other swords remote and blades weak.

51. By your life, syntax appeared in mourning
For your death, wailing in grief.

52. If the expert of this art attacked you,
He would seek syntax while walking barefoot.

53. We lost a sheikh whose abundant knowledge
Fortified high principles after him.

54. In the art of al-Khalil ibn Ahmad,
He brought novel words with powerful examples.

55. If he gained the means to heaven through knowledge,
His pegs are eternal in glory.

56. With copious tears and grief we mourned
The vast ocean of generosity and perfection.

57. He was a father to students, showing them
A cascade of virtue connected to merit.

58. Sincerely advising seekers of knowledge,
He spared no effort in teaching the ignorant.

59. He composed books clarifying Ibn Idris’ knowledge,
With texts conveying the fruits of the finest carrier.

60. He guided students through his abridgement,
Seeing in them one perfection after another.

61. He did not suspect any but the envious of ingratitude,
Or doubt any but the gluttonous of plagiarism.

62. Openly he gave generously of every merit,
And strove quietly to hide them from the virtuous.

63. He is the ocean of knowledge, truly the ocean of dew,
The two seas overflowed from him fully.

64. If Ibn Rafa’ lived in his time,
His syntax would have folded the desert paths.

65. If al-Qaffāl witnessed his lectures one day,
He would never have turned away from protecting them.

66. Every sincere person intones his praises,
Enchanting the hearing of the dreamy listener.

67. With my tears and words I will weep for him,
For the two seas of knowledge and noble rain.

68. He abandoned craving for positions,
Just as the doe abandons the howl of the wild dog.

69. He shunned them as they did not tempt him
With their deceptive illusion and flattery.

70. He never cast an eye toward them though they flirted
With the coquetry of a maiden in finery.

71. You always met him welcoming and giving good news,
For you only saw him with noble traits.

72. From him, manners describing his visitor flowed,
As cool drink flows purely for the healthy.

73. I console the prayer niches without their imam,
Though he followed the greatest imams.

74. I console the jurisprudence classes after him,
For succeeding him makes all listless.

75. Say to the envious who cannot match him -
Shame will expose you among the learned circles.

76. The authority of Abd al-Rahim was true,
And his enemies struggled against it in vain.

77. A folk reached high trying to take his place,
But attained nothing of what they wished.

78. How can the short hand reach for a star,
And how can dust attain what is beyond its grasp?

79. Whoever desires his lofty recitation rank
Is not reasonable in people’s eyes.

80. God placed Jamāl al-Din in eternity
To enjoy His complete forgiveness.

81. His Merciful Lord received him in mercy
With cascades following cascades.

82. The pleasure of Paradise met him quickly,
Heralding abundant and immediate pleasure.

83. The God of the wilderness revived him with joy,
Spirit, and satisfaction in the brilliance of morning and night.

84. He was sincere in deeds and knowledge,
Not wasting the efforts of a worker.

85. My praises of him transform into elegies
Weeping with tears welling up.

86. Their ardent passions assist me in lamenting,
Most of them from my agony without restraint.

87. I exhausted my treasuries of patience and tears,
Emptying both these vessels.

88. I will recite verses at his grave,
And make the deaf stones hear my dictation.

89. We are but a caravan of death heading to decay,
Our days make us march like camels.

90. We traveled stages toward the graves,
With only a few stages left.

91. This is the way of all people,
Each a traveler after another traveler.
