1. How have his pledges of faithfulness fared
After his estrangement and aloofness?

2. Suspicions come to him from the slanderers,
Excuses are made, yet doubts remain.

3. No blame rests on one who turns away,
Steadfast in his rejection should he complain,

4. For in passion and in loving obedience
A man seeks what another denies.

5. O reproacher of my love, make excuses brief,
For I see them add to his pain.

6. How can one who yearns heed blame
When patience and resolve have waned?

7. By my father, the shy gazelle for whom
Saplings are its stout pillars and trunks.

8. It shook a bough of its stately form,
Wishing the herdsman’s crook would guide it along.

9. A doe-eyed beauty excuses my love,
My cheek adorned by its blush.

10. By glances that guard the blossoming of a mouth
Whose dew my tears can no longer hide.

11. For its love I have a burning passion
That robes my body in leanness.

12. My friend, let me be, though I suffer,
For in my heart is a flame that cannot be quenched.

Let my eyes flow with bloody tears

14. After a life now past and gone.
Fate has decreed our separation, who can

15. Conquer fate? Affliction is its army.
What days have been pleasant to the eye

16. And ear? Their lightning flashes and thunder?
When righteous Salah al-Din assumed power,

17. His rise and position were binding.
A king before whom other kings bow down,

18. For they are his servants and slaves.
With valor and noble deeds he established a kingdom

19. Founded by his forefathers before.
His shining morals expose the days,

20. And his generosity rains onto the clouds.
His home is a sanctuary, journeyed to

21. At all times by the righteous and pilgrims.
Steadfast of heart when the army quakes,

22. Fearing the uncertainty that clouds bring.

23. Keen of mind, if a hidden matter eludes him,
His intellect bears witness.

24. In both cases he is rain and lion,
His promise hoped for, his threats feared.

25. In him is ferocity and mercy for foe
And friend alike, whom he helps and benefits.

26. He has perfected his craft until even
His enemies and enviers praise him.

27. O Guardian of Mankind, a servant's prayer
Whose quest your ode has helped achieve.

28. Ask me not of time, for I see
Its burdens and worries loom.

29. A time whose kindness is with others,
Harsh and severe to me.

How can the butcher rejoice on feast day,

31. Bankrupt, the feast his feast?
People desire the meat of sacrifices

32. While he longs for their remains and scraps.
It is time your days turned white
