1. I still suffer much woe in this life,
For long has my time been apportioned.

2. So praise be to Allah whose rule
Has confounded the stars in my sky.

3. I've become a butcher, yet at home
I know not the smell of meat.

4. My portion of it is but the name,
With that name I'm content.

5. Want has denied me the finest tastes -
I know them but by their scent.

6. In my ignorance I was made poor,
So God led me astray in His wisdom.
