1. To whom do the ruins of al-Brdaan belong,
Where I spent a morning during the departure of the camels?

١. لمن الرُسوم بعرصة البَردان
أَقوت غُداةَ تَرَحُّلِ الأَظعانِ

2. If you asked the house of 'Alwah whether it would answer you,
Or whether any but the eloquent would answer you,

٢. هَل دارُ علوةَ إِن سأَلتَ مُجيبَةٌ
أَو هَل يُجيبك غَيرَ ذاتِ لِسانِ

3. Since the misfortune befell Afeen then its ravens
Began wandering between the guests' dwellings,

٣. دِمَن عَفَينَ فَأَصبَحت غُربانها
يردين بَينَ مَنازِلِ الضِيفانِ

4. Indeed, the guest stays there generously hosted
As long as he wishes between platters and bowls

٤. وَلَقَد يُقيم الضَيف فيها مُكرماً
ما شاءَ بَينَ غَلائقِ وَجِفانِ

5. I visited 'Alwah in Iraq and its people,
From first light to Najraan,

٥. طرقتك علوة بِالعِراق وَأَهلها
ما بَينَ تَثليث إِلى نُجرانِ

6. I found my way to you between the disheveled hair which has been loosened,
And thrown by the cities - victims of disasters,

٦. أَنّي اِهتَدَت لك بَينَ شَعث قَد رَمَت
بِهِم البلاد نَوائِب الحَدَثانِ

7. Lying down on the forearms of every smooth mount, emaciated like the tendons of the arteries,
I visited while in my eyelids and the eyelids of Muhanndi weakness and slumber,

٧. متوسِّدينَ ذِراع كل مَطيَّةٍ
عَجفاء مثل حنيَّةِ الشُريانِ

8. On cushions resembling gems to make them perfect Jewels that charm gazelles with their glances,
Scents waft from them as if they carry musk mice in the caskets, They smiled coyly and I almost drank that coolness were it not for shyness and fear of The Compassionate,

٨. طرقت وَفي جَفني وَجَفن مُهَنَّدي
وَهناً غِراراً رقدة وَيَماني

9. They give license in sleep for union and have Often boiled grapes for the sober, Then I awoke and saw no Yemenis
Except Suhayl continually twinkling.

٩. في بَدَّن مِثلَ البُدور لَتمِّمها
يَسلُبُننا بِنَواظِر الغُزلانِ

10. So I called upon my companions and the lightest sleeper amongst them awoke leaning as the drunkards sway.
Then I straightened myself on the saddlebags of a jade camel bending like an archers curved bow,

١٠. يَنضاع مِنهُنَّ العَبير كَأَنَّما
يَحمِلنَ فأر المِسك في الأَردانِ

11. Their necks hang low from extreme fatigue collars on collars,
Indeed strangers have wounded you and you still Have your heart wounded early in the morning by their departure .

١١. وَبَسمنَ عَن بَردٍ هَمَمتُ بِرَشفه
لَولا الحَياءُ وَخشية الرَحمَنِ

12. They traveled in the morning each group; processions and military bands processions, They grazed the war zone until its humps flowed over their backs,
From their softness, like rain upon travelers,

١٢. يُرخِصنَ في النَومِ الوِصال وَطالَما
أَغلَينَ صَفقته عَلى اليَقظانِ

13. They hastily bid us farewell before dawn and the cawing of crows
And they let the tears for separation flow so two flows of tears and sorrows met, You ask now about their houses and their people Or whether aught but one with a voice will answer you,

١٣. ثُمَّ اِنتَبَهَت وَما رَأَيتُ يَمانِياً
إِلّا سُهَيلاً دائِم الخَفَقانِ

14. None remains there but disheveled ruins worn away Like bracelets made of cypresses,
I knew them as the refuge of one in fear,

١٤. فَدَعَوتُ أَصحابي فَقامَ أَخفَّهم
نَوماً يَميلُ تَمايل السَكرانِ

15. As security for one fought and paradise for a transgressor, O 'Alwah if fate with its rule separates us
And each of the two has parted ways!

١٥. ثُمَّ اِستَوَيت عَلى غلالة بازِلٍ
طاوٍ كَقَوسِ النابِلِ المرنانِ

16. Then replace me as a companion deserved To strike the skulls of peers if you wish!
Do not make me like the herder of a small flock Buying camels with a horse!

١٦. تَكبو بِأَعناق الرِكابِ وكلها
ملقٍ لِفَرطِ كَلالِهِ بِجِرانِ

17. Or a man who once spilled his waterskin at the mirage Of an apparition with misleading glitter.
The waters part then fail his vision,

١٧. وَلَقَد شَجاكَ الظاعِنونَ وَلَم تَزَل
يَشجو فؤادك باكِر الإِظعانِ

18. And likewise is the mirage, deceiver of the thirsty!
It would not have harmed you had you been True to an appointment and added recommendation to this beauty With benevolence and

١٨. رَحَلوا غداة البَينِ كل شِملَّةٍ
عَيرانَةٍ وَشَمردَلٍ عَيرانِ

19. Concealed your love when it is a hidden flame As the flints hide firestarters! If the lover gives up his reins to the hands of the beloved I took my reins firmly in my hands. Damn the heart which has space for naught But love of so and so woman and so and so man,
If a man gets used to disgrace, tell me: What is the difference between dog and man?!

١٩. رَعَت الحَميم فآض فَوقَ ظُهورُها
مِن نيهِنَّ كهبّة الرُكبانِ

20. Death of the disgraced as their living and the hand of the noble Are alike whether paralyzed or severed! So if I survive, I will fulfil the wishes of my she-camel
With a bridle for every group, opposed

٢٠. عاجلننا بفراقهنَّ فُجاءَةَ
قَبلَ الصَباحِ وَناعب الغُربانِ

21. I hurl the saddles from which I will throw her goods
Where youth's saddlebags are thrown!

٢١. وَسفحن لِلبين المَدامِع فاِلتَقى
دُرّانِ درُّ مَدامِعٍ وَجُمانِ

22. And if I survive and 'Unusl and Janna assist me, who were gifted with nobility by the Syrians, I would happen upon life after satisfaction That is pleasing and asking from others in improper time,
From Al-amir Gharib bin Muhammad,

٢٢. الآن تَسأل دارِهِم عَن أَهلِها
أَو هَل تُجيبك غَيرَ ذاتِ لِسانِ

23. King of kings and knight of knights! A king whom those that take pride revolve around his door As they would around the cube house (Ka'ba)
The light of guidance and the serenity of faith shine upon his pillows While his appearance gives his beloved good tidings of success before greeting and affection, His appearance gives him away even if his description were disguised Like the Franks when describing (Arab) men! God has placed some of His love for him in people's hearts So you will find him beloved in every garden (Paradise)

٢٣. لَم يَبقُ فيها غير شُعث جُثَّم
قَد قُلِّدَت قِطعاً مِنَ الأَرسانِ

24. So humble before God - Praise be to Him! that if he wished He would level kings off their thrones! A king that debases himself voluntarily on battle days While debasement there is not like other debasements! So his right hand is for nobility and softness And his forehead for clarity and crowns!
I did not think horses get accustomed to saddlebags Until one appeared on the back of his steed! And if he grasps the pen to write, you will see in his writing,

٢٤. وَلَقَد عَهَدتُ بِهِنَّ مأوى خائِف
وَأَمان مَحروبٍ وَجَنَّة جاني

25. The enemies' fire and friends' paradise! The pen, whose hissing is the words of his ideas Coming out of his ears! Wondrous that oceans flow in the palm of his hand! His palm, while they flow through every edifice! An arrow, if he feathers it with his fingers and shoots Hits the distinguished fighting men! It is a sharp sword by his nature Death and fate like poison and viper venom! Your palm has equipped him to offer advice and prohibition, Generosity, etiquette and clarity in speech!
It informs you of what lies in hearts as if Ink were poured in every garden!

٢٥. يا عَلو إِن جار الزَمان بِحُكمِهِ
فينا وَكل اثنين يَفتَرِقانِ

26. So when your palm has saturated him as a scribe His logic has blinded the sun! There is kinship through nobility between us Not fathers or countries! We were suckled by the same knowledge And etiquette before suckling milk! So favour me with your wealth or prestige Or they are like the generous man's wealth and status! The moon is praised for its brightness and they say It earns from a second illuminator,
I do not see two men that differ Over generosity which was inherent in them! It shakes for good deeds and good behaviour To the most generous is like boughs shaking! Praise be to the hand of calamities,

٢٦. فاِستَبدِلي بي إِن رَغِبتِ مشيّعاً
لَبِقاً بِضَربِ جَماجِمِ الأَقرانِ

27. For it is the rust of villains and polish of youths! It drew from you a bare sword in every direction, each with its own edge Like a lion except that unlike a lion Your neighbor dwells safely while The lion's neighbor does not feel secure! So make peace even if it vexes the envious Forever immortalizing the two days of departure and return! O Lord of an army the like of which You sufficed and horses stumble now upon the plains! With handsome features as if their locks Are doors without inhabitants! Offering himself boldly to death between refined (swords) and spearheads! His open wounds pour blood As the bucket of one watering the pasture gushes!
The slaves of money fell head first As the morning gale tilts the tips of branches! The burning heat slapped their foreheads and cheeks So it is as if they are painting themselves tar! Each dishevelled one from all directions has the night upon him with uncouth scruff, Howling so dogs bark as response Like a wolf that has howled at the top of Sil'man Mountain!

٢٧. لا تَجعَلي مثلاً كَراعي ثُلَّة
يَبتاع عَيراً ناهِقاً بِحِصانِ

28. Your fire called him in exhaustion without articulation And weakness at the fluttering of flames! So he fell with his friends at your feet and found Death from you but your hands gave safety! And they became your servants through kindness And only the free are reclaimed through benevolence!
How many groups have you empowered so they ruled Kingdoms well in every place! Thanked you, exalted you with praise, and held As high above those you ruled by righteousness! Did you forget Ka'b bin Zuhayr and the gallant M'an bin Za'eedah brother of Shaybaan?! Leaving Hatem as loyal to you as the Lesser Bear Follows the Greater Bear constellation!

٢٨. أَو كامرىءٍ يَوماً أَراقَ سِقاءَه
لِبَريق آلٍ كاذِبِ اللَمَعانِ

29. It hints with praise of overflow even if it is in a position Below where the two Moons (full & crescent) stand! Certain that immortalized praise Is best and that wealth is something fleeting
Or do the rain clouds compete with you in generosity With rains from your hands among crows?! But how can a town you run rivers in dry up While in its regions your hands are two seas?! And fate is an eye for which you, O man, are the eye lashes Without which an eye has no good! I assumed the best of you, so if you grant it May my tongue thank you as long as it speaks!

٢٩. يَلحظه ماء ثم يُخلِف ظَنَّهُ
وَكَذا السَراب خَديعة الظَمآنِ

٣٠. ما كانَ ضَرَّك لَو مَنَنتِ بِمَوعِدٍ
وَشَفعتِ هَذا الحُسنَ بالإِحسانِ

٣١. وَكتمت حُبَّك وَهوَ نارٌ مِثلما
كتم الزِناد ثَواقِبَ النِيرانِ

٣٢. إِنّي إِذا نبذ المُحِبُّ عِنانَهُ
بِيَدِ الحَبيبِ قبضت ثني عِناني

٣٣. تَبّاً لِقَلبٍ لَيسَ فيهِ مَوضِعٌ
إِلّا لِحُبِّ فُلانَةٍ وَفُلانِ

٣٤. وَإِذا الفَتى أَلفَ الهَوان فَنَبِّني
ما الفَرقُ بَينَ الكَلبِ وَالإِنسانِ

٣٥. مَوتُ الذَليل كَعَيشِهِ وَيَد الفَتى
شَلّاء أَو مَقطوعَة سِيّانِ

٣٦. فَلَئِن سَلمت لأَقضينَّ لبانَتي
بذميل كل شملَّةٍ مِذعانِ

٣٧. أَرمي الفِجاجِ بِها لأَلقيَ رحلها
في حَيث تُلقى أَرحلُ الفِتيانِ

٣٨. وَلَئِن سَلِمتُ وَساعدتني عنسل
وَجناء قَد نَحلت من السَريانِ

٣٩. لأصادفنَّ العَيشَ بَعدَ رويَّةٍ
تَحبو وَمسألة لِغَير أَوانِ

٤٠. عِندَ الأَميرِ غَريب بن مُحَمَّدٍ
ملك المُلوكِ وَفارِسُ الفِرسانِ

٤١. مَلِكٌ يَطوفُ المعتفون بِبابِهِ
كَطوافهم بِالبَيت ذي الأَركانِ

٤٢. طلق يَلوح عَلى أَسِرَّةِ وَجهِهِ
نور الهُدى وَسَكينَة الإِيمانِ

٤٣. وَيُبَشِر العافين بشر حَبيبه
بِالنُجح قَبلَ تَصافُحٍ وَتَداني

٤٤. ينبيك عنه وَلَو تنكَّر بشره
مثل الفرند بصفح كل يَماني

٤٥. أَلقى الإِلَه عَلَيه مِنهُ مَحَبَّةً
فَتَراهُ مَحبوباً بِكُلِّ جَنانِ

٤٦. مُتَواضِعاً لِلَّهِ جَلَّ وَلَو يَشا
صَقَعَ المُلوك لَهُ عَلى الأَذقانِ

٤٧. ملك يهين النَفسَ في يَوم الوغى
وَهوانها في الحَربِ غَيرَ هَوانِ

٤٨. فَيَمينه لِلمشرفيَّةِ وَالنَدى
وَجَبينه لِلبيض وَالتُيجانِ

٤٩. ما إِن حَسِبتُ الخَيلَ تألَف ضَيغماً
حَتّى تَبَدّى فَوقَ ظَهرِ حِصانِ

٥٠. وَإِذا اِنتَضى قَلَماً رأَيت بكتبه
نار العداة وَجَنَّةِ الأُخوانِ

٥١. قَلَماً إِذا كانَ الكَلامُ صَريره
نابت نَواطره عَن الآذانِ

٥٢. عَجَباً لَهُ إِذ يَستَقر بِكَفِّهِ
وَبحارها تَجري بِكُلِّ بَنانِ

٥٣. سَهمٌ إِذا ما راشه بِبَنانِهِ
وَرَمى أَصابَ مُقاتِل الأَقرانِ

٥٤. صِلٌّ بخلقته المَنايا وَالمُنى
كالسُّمِّ وَالدَرياق في الثُعبانِ

٥٥. أَعدته كفكَ بِالبَلاغَةِ وَالنُهى
وَالجودِ وَالآدابِ وَالتِبيانِ

٥٦. يُنبيك عَمّا في القُلوبِ كَأَنَّما
جُعِلَ المداد سواد كل جِنانِ

٥٧. قَلَماً إِذا رَشَحته كفَّكَ كاتِباً
أَزرى بِمَنطِقِهِ عَلى سحبان

٥٨. بَيني وَبَينَكَ لِلفخار قَرابة
في العِلمِ لا الأَباءِ وَالبُلدانِ

٥٩. رُضَعاء علم واحِد وَرضاعة
الآداب قَبلَ رِضاعَة الأَلبانِ

٦٠. فاِمنُن بِمالِك أَو بِجاهِكَ أَو هُما
مال الكَريمِ وَجاهُهُ مِثلانِ

٦١. فالبَدرُ يَحمد في الضِياءِ وَإِنَّما
قالوا تكسَّب مِن مُنيرٍ ثاني

٦٢. جُبِلَ الأَنامُ عَلى الخِلافِ وَلا أَرى
في جودِهِ رَجُلَينِ يَختَلِفانِ

٦٣. يَهتَزُّ لِلمَعروف وَهوَ سَجيَّة
لِلأَكرَمين كَهِزَّة النَشوانِ

٦٤. لِلَّهِ دَرُّ يَد الخُطوبِ فَإِنَّها
صَدأ اللِئامِ وَصَيقل الفِتيانِ

٦٥. جَرَّدنَ منك أَبا سنان صارِماً
في كُلِّ ناحيَةٍ لَهُ حدانِ

٦٦. كَاللَيثِ إِلّا أَنَّ جارك آمن
وَاللَيثُ لَيسَ بآمنِ الجيرانِ

٦٧. فاِسلم وَإِن رغِمَ الحَسود مُخَلِداً
أَبَداً لِيَومي تائِل وَطِعانِ

٦٨. يا رَب جَيش قَد كَفَفتِ بِمِثلِهِ
وَالخَيل تعثر في النَجيع الآني

٦٩. بِشَوازِبٍ فيهِ كَأَنَّ فروجها
أَبواب خاليَةٍ من السُكّانِ

٧٠. وَمُعرِّضٍ دونَ الكَتيبَة نَفسه
لِلمَوتِ بَينَ مثقَّفٍ وَسِنانِ

٧١. أَوجرته نَجلاء تَنضح بِالدما
نَضحاً كَجَيب الثاكِلِ المَرِنانِ

٧٢. وَعِصابة مال الكرى بِرؤوسِهِم
مَيل الصَبا بِذَوائِبِ الأَغصانِ

٧٣. سَفع الهَجيرُ جِباهَهم وَخُدودهم
فَكَأَنَّما يَطلين بِالقُطرانِ

٧٤. مِن كُلِّ أَشعَثٍ ضَمَّ في أَقطارِهِ
لَيل عَلَيهِ بِحاصِب شَفّانِ

٧٥. يَعوي لِتَنَبحه الكِلاب كَما عَوى
ذيب بِأَعلى قُلَّة الصَمّانِ

٧٦. نادته نارِك وَهيَ غَيرَ فَصيحَةٍ
وَهناً بِخَفق ذَوائِبِ النِيرانِ

٧٧. فَهَوى بصحبته لَدَيكَ وَأَدرَكوا
مِنكَ المُنى وَعَطا يَديكَ أَمانِ

٧٨. وَغَدوا عَبيدك بِالجَميل وَإِنَّما
يُستعيدُ الأَحرارُ بِالإِحسانِ

٧٩. كَم معشر أَوليتهم فَمَلكتهم
نعماً بِها شادوا بِكُلِّ مَكانِ

٨٠. شَكَروا وَجَلّوا بِالثَناءِ وَحَمَّلوا
فَوقَ الَّذينَ مَلكَت بِالأَيمانِ

٨١. أَنسَيتَنا كعب بِن مامَةَ وَالفَتى
مَعَن بن زائِدَةٍ أَخا شَيبانِ

٨٢. وَتركت حاتِم تابِعاً لك مثلما
تَبع الثُريّا كَوكَبَ الدَبرانِ

٨٣. يَشري الثَناءِ بِما غَلا وَلَو أَنَّهُ
في مَنزل مِن دونِهِ القَمَرانِ

٨٤. متيقناً أَنَّ الثَناءَ مخلد
بآقٍ وَأَنَّ المال شَيءٌ فاني

٨٥. أَو هَل يباريك السَحاب وَجوده
ماء وجود يَديك بالعِقبانِ

٨٦. بَل كَيفَ تجدب بلدة تَجري بِها
وَيَداكَ في أَرجائِها بَحرانِ

٨٧. وَالدَهر عَينٌ أَنتَ إِنسانٌ لَها
لا خَيرَ في عَينٍ بلا إِنسانِ

٨٨. ظَنّي بِكَ الحُسنى فَإِن أَوليتها
فليشكرنَّكَ ما بَقيت لِساني
