1. I swear by your affection, for your distance
Has made the heart of a lover pine in passion,

2. And blame you for being cold, yet in love
He's preoccupied from blaming or reproaching.

3. Sometimes he'd shun youth and be led astray
By the magic of eyes to youth with its reins.

4. By my soul's desire whose glances
In the heart faster than the slash of swords.

6. My palm attain the solution of his garment?
I had hoped for his kindness had fate not

7. Let separation control me in its rulings.

8. And I had filled my hands with youth’s pleasure
And restrained from its forbidden paths.

And make yourself dislike bearing its blame.

Is not being near the minister all that

11. Distracted you from the day of union?
Say to the minister, son of the Euphrates, you

12. Hope still waits for clouds of his bounty.

13. If time kept me from you, it kept one who
Meets you in his dreams away from you.

14. If I complain of you, many troubles appear
Good in the end to the longing lover.

15. Or I was patient with beautiful patience,
The eyelids’ patience from tears and sorrow.

16. So with what face do I criticize time
Whose days near you were of its days?

17. Your beauty's like the full moon at its peak,
A face the full moon copies at its prime.

18. By your affection which is the farthest aim
Goodness reaches in all its ways.

19. My heart changed not in its passion for you
Nor did your patience's beauty stray in its dreams.

20. Even if time returns to what I loved
After its audacity and wildness,

21. I won't thank the favor except from you
Or when your palm drew near after its goal.

22. Or wherever praise is due without what
The minister favored from his grace.

23. How time has possessed me and returned
Employing me when I became its servant.

24. And to the minister I raised in it
A title from his slave and servant.

25. O you who when good starts flows
To the furthest extent in completion,

26. I wish for your slave that his words not
Be sullied by complaining of time's injustice.

27. And protect him from his days and decrease
His sins and enlighten him in his darkness,

28. O you who competes with eagles in nobility
And resembles the hunter among his uncles,

29. Like the full moon at its peak, rain
In its downpour, and lion in its boldness,

30. The white bright swords are not like
The black inkwells from his pens.

31. And when hearing the eloquence of his words,
No difference between his tongue and sword.

32. O son of the Euphrates, the Euphrates is but
A stream to your abundant sea in its fullness.
