O you who took my heart from me

يا من أخذ قلبي مني

1. O you who took my heart from me
Your love bewildered me

١. يا مَن أخَذْ قَلْبي مِنِّي
هَواكَ هَيَّمَني

2. You veiled me from myself
O beloved, so I did not appear

٢. حجَبْتَني عني
بِيَّا فَما أظْهَر

3. And I was absent from my eyes
As if I did not appear

٣. وغِبْتُ عن عيْني
كأنِّي لم أظْهر

4. So I started looking for myself
Maybe I will find myself

٤. فَصِرتُ أطلُبني
لَعلَّ بِي أظْفَر

5. And I said to myself, leave me alone
And let my union with you suffice

٥. وقُلْتُ في ذِهْني دَعْني
وِصالِي بي يُغْني

6. Whoever wants to remain
Will perish from illusions

٦. مَنْ حَبَّ أن يَبْقَى
يَفْنَى عنِ الأوهامْ

7. And will truly become characterized
With the attributes of servants

٧. ويَتَّصِفْ حَقَّا
بِصِفةِ الخُدَّام

8. For he will ascend
The heights of greatness

٨. فإنه يُرْقَى
مَراقِي الأعْلام

9. Living an everlasting sovereign, satisfied
With his poverty

٩. يعيشْ ملِكْ دايِم مَهَنِّي
بِفَقْرِه مَغْنى

10. This is the one who is content
In this existence, a sultan

١٠. هذا الذِي يَقْنَع
في ذَا الوجودْ سُلطان

11. So he does not aspire
For Satan to gloat over him

١١. فلا يكُنْ يَطْمَع
يَشْمَت بِه الشيطان

12. And when he is deceived
He will suffer loss

١٢. وعندَما يُخْدَع
يبُوءْ بالخُسْرانْ

13. So understand and take from me, my son
And after this, keep me company

١٣. فافْهَمْ وخُذْ عنِّي يا بني
وبَعْدَ ذَا صِلْني

14. If you believe me
Leave foolishness and understand

١٤. إِنْ كُنْتَ تصدقني
خَلِّ العذولْ وافهمْ

15. And listen to hear me
This knowledge is learned

١٥. واصْغَى لِتَسْمَعْني
ذَا الْعِلْمُ يُتْعَلمَّ

16. And beware and do not belittle
One whose ignorance is known

١٦. واحْذَرْ ولا تُدْنِي
مَنْ جَهْلُهُ يُعْلَمْ

17. For he is tiresomely stupid
So leave him and accompany me

١٧. فإنَّه مَعْلومْ يُضْني
فاتْرُكْهُ واصْحُبْني

18. Where is the one who seeks
And understands the meaning?

١٨. أيْنَ الذي يَطْلُب
ويَفْهَمُ المعنى

19. Let him then observe
The star of wisdom from us

١٩. دَعْهُ إِذَنْ يَرْقُب
نَجْمَ الحكم منَّا

20. If he appears, he draws near
And remains reciting our verses

٢٠. فإنْ ظَهَرْ يَقْرُبْ
ويَبْقَى يَنْشُدْنا

21. Passion for the beautiful, my friend, makes me cease to exist
And my drinking from the lowly

٢١. عِشْقُ المليحْ يا صاحْ فَنِّي
وشُرْبي مِنْ دَنِّي
