1. Live a grave beside the dunes,
Among the earth's depths with the best peace.

2. Oh father, tell me how to please you, for
My heart has become prone to sins.

3. And burning longing settles in the ribs,
Bringing doom from the heat of pain.

4. The earth pieces beneath your body are a carpet,
And a polished cover with satisfaction.

5. Today I am in deepest gloom,
Bearing the calamities of days.

6. Oh dust dwelling the midst of dust,
Where are you, enjoyed after harmony?

7. It was a dream that went far away and turned,
Or is it the reality of illusions?

8. Where from us did you go after gathering,
Leaving us in lasting sadness?

9. By my Lord, tell truly, did you come
Or have my eyes lived from pain?

10. By my Lord, tell truly, did you come
Or are these fancies in the sleep of slumberers?

11. Will the sons of Mar'i see you one day,
When wombs become kins for wombs?

12. When the caller calls them in trembling voice
For the power of dreams.

13. Some say: He was among us, so how
Did death hunt him without the slightest word?

14. You, when fasting destroys a people,
Were not but facing, fasting.

15. You, when staying up destroys a people,
Were not but facing, staying up.

16. You were no traitor, liar, or wicked,
But the best of all people.

17. He left toward his Lord, so we panicked
At the turns of fate and days.

18. After him we remained like a mirage
When it suddenly turned to the toxic.

19. My Lord knows every heart,
None but Him in existence is All-Knowing.

20. If only I were his ransom from the arrows of death,
When doom comes suddenly without pausing.

21. I would have lain in wait for doom upon myself,
Hastening toward it on foot.

22. When death lies in wait for my soul,
I do not restrain it from reluctance.

23. Oh father, are you pleased with me, and will
This elegy please you after farewell?

24. If that is not so, rise, listen to death,
Ransom without hesitation or pausing.

25. Surely the impact of death undoubtedly
Leads us onward by a tether.

26. It thus leads all of creation toward it,
With waves whose billows are surging.

27. As if death is a shepherd, and we
Are flocks it drags by the lead.

28. Death has set out every creature toward it,
Aiming them for its goal.

29. To guide all toward a narrow pit,
Where it has buried the skulls upon skulls.

30. In life there is no eternity for any creature,
Every creature's fate is to fall.

31. And peace be upon them, peace,
In graves garbed in peace.

32. I wonder when my appointed time will be,
To see it in the burrow of forgetfulness.

33. How has loss today taken my father from us?
How have you become distanced without us for intimates?

34. How do I live when you are gone, and how is
Living sweet for me with the days?

35. I do not see myself desiring life ever,
With the passage of days and years.

36. Loss has shrouded him, so I have become miserable
After power I thought everlasting.

37. What misfortune has suddenly struck my heart,
Grieving, like the debris of collapse?

38. Oh breeze of the graves, if you come, carry
The finest peace from my father to us.

39. If you return to him, carry love
And every lasting longing to him.
