Rise, my lad, and take away my cares

1. Rise, my lad, and take away my cares
As the darkness smiles and dusk appears,

2. And the Pleiades shine fully dressed
In the perfect moon's luminous vest.

3. As if it were a cup the gloom passed round,
The moon and stars the wine that crowned.

4. As if the blue of all those sparkling eyes
Were slumbering lids that wake and rise.

5. And though they seem a noble company,
Sick with yearning for what none can see,

6. The moon and Pleiades I thought I knew
Until the distance made them two,

7. And she drooped westward, while, still bright,
His smile pursued her into night.

8. An earring slipped from her ear and fell -
A slave picked it up, kissed it, fare thee well!

9. And dawn amid the gloom like wine mixed water
Showed night still sipped, though fled dawn's daughter.
