1. Alone he stood upon the plains
Like a conqueror, though bound,

2. Obstructing clouds in endless skies
While he slumbers through the light of day

3. His image fades with frequent mirages
If only this inanimate object were more rigid

4. We thought him nearer, approaching
Yet farther as we walked on from his protection

5. Until we reached him after long travel
That wearied our bodies and exhausted them

6. Vegetation grew upon him, amazing,
Life crept forth from such hardness

7. As if patches of sand bowed down
Adorned with plants like emerald

8. The soul was not fooled by what it saw
Of ornament on the bride, to be praised

9. So it bent down, then in devotion
Witnessing the work of the Almighty

10. And realized that I, like this inanimate object
In life, grow cold
