1. He slept no other sleep but the grave,
Having spent his life in hardship.

2. The meanings of happiness are fifty years,
Though life be everlasting.

3. The secret died, O people; behold his achievements though he was an Arab.
Whoever lived nobly died;

4. Whoever lived for the weak died strong.
A calamity in rhetoric came and took away a pillar, firmly rooted.

5. It shocked the eloquent, until no weeping eye over it remained dry.
And he is Lebanon, the meeting place of elegies

6. Flowing from Egypt, from Syria.
And purity itself weeps for him, freely flowing to meet freely flowing.

7. Though the secret died, he was Lebanon's youth,
Yet his achievement filled the East, orientally.

8. The mother of languages laments him, though he was her flourishing, intrepid, faithful young man.
He immortalized pride in her gatherings, flowing with pure rhetoric.

9. He who dies the like of this remains, though he is dead, eternally remembered alive.
O beloved of purity, it is summer come,

10. And purity calls you: Come!
Spread the plain with pearls and prepare

11. To announce good tidings, but they came as an obituary.
So the pure place became turbid, and at night

12. None came there to drink.
The shadows of the willows were deserted; no longer did ringdoves coo in them.

13. Solitude descended on his valley; even ostriches and wild cows avoided it.
And the gardens became desolate at night,

14. The bulbul's song became a screech.
Time has changed all our conditions, until the cedars' sap dried up and did not flow.

15. What man of literature spent his life nobly
Without winding up the field of man's life in folds?

16. You are the epitome of the fortune of every literary man
Who was nationalist in all his affairs.

17. You lived free, and none in the East lives free
Or can live except wretchedly.

18. While the ignorant lives in wealth.
I have seen the world slight the noble, so I turned away from it disdainfully.

19. He who boldly opposed evil meets death only boldly.
Sleep, my beloved, for the grave holds nothing to frighten you,

20. No misfortune to suffer, and no time left to live.
Sleep in secure rest, suffering there

21. None of the woes you suffered in life.
Sleep, and let me weep for you; and had you known my condition you would have wept for me.
