I fear my teacher when

أخشى مربيتي

1. I fear my teacher when
dawn breaks and I am startled,

١. أَخشى مُرَبِّيَتي إِذا
طَلَعَ النَهارُ وَأَفزَعُ

2. and I cower among my friends,
anticipating her punishment.

٢. وَأَظَلُّ بَينَ صَواحِبي
لِعِقابِها أَتَوَقَّعُ

3. Neither tears intercede for me, nor
does long beseeching benefit me.

٣. لا الدَمعُ يَشفَعُ لي وَلا
طولُ التَضَرُّعِ يَنفَعُ

4. And I fear my mother when
night falls and I am anxious,

٤. وَأَخافُ والِدَتي إِذا
جَنَّ الظَلامُ وَأَجزَعُ

5. and I stay up dreading the punishment
while my eyes will not sleep.

٥. وَأَبيتُ أَرتَقِبُ الجَزا
ءَ وَأَعيُني لا تَهجَعُ

6. It would not have harmed me had I
listened quietly and been humble.

٦. ما ضَرَّني لَو كُنتُ أَسـ
ـتَمِعُ الكَلامَ وَأَخضَعُ

7. It would not have harmed me had I
protected my papers so they would not be torn.

٧. ما ضَرَّني لَو صُنتُ أَثـ
ـوابي فَلا تَتَقَطَّعُ

8. And had I kept my pages safe
in my notebook so they would not be scattered.

٨. وَحَفِظتُ أَوراقي بِمَحـ
ـفَظَتي فَلا تَتَوَزَّعُ

9. Then I would have lived secure and
frolicked in bliss and luxuriated.

٩. فَأَعيشُ آمِنَةً وَأَمـ
ـرَعُ في الهَناءِ وَأَرتَعُ
