1. A wine in Babylon once was sealed,
So the Hebrew rabbi revealed,
١. خَمرَةٌ في بابِلٍ قَد صُهرِجَت
هَكَذا أَخبَرَ حاخامُ اليَهود
2. In the belly of a dark vat,
Where eternal life was foretold.
٢. أَودَعوها جَوفَ دَنٍّ مُظلِمٍ
وَلَدَيهِ بَشَّروها بِالخُلود
3. They asked the soothsayers
About its drinker, and when
٣. سَأَلوا الكُهّانَ عَن شارِبِها
وَعَنِ الساقي وَفي أَيِّ العُهود
4. Would be the time it was poured.
The answer: a graceful young man,
٤. فَأَجابوهُم فَتىً ذو مِرَّةٍ
مِن بَني مِصرٍ لَهُ فَضلٌ وَجود
5. Of the Egyptian race, generosity his fame,
Enamored of flute and reed,
٥. مُغرَمٌ بِالعودِ وَالنايِ مَعاً
مولَعٌ بِالشُربِ وَالناسُ هُجود
6. Addicted to drinking, others to prayer bowed,
His only cares, spending money and song.
٦. هَمُّهُ فَصدُ دِنانٍ وَنَدىً
وَأَبوهُ هَمُّهُ جَمعُ النُقود
