ردا كؤوسكما عن شبه مفؤود

1. Turn away your cups from the likeness of the lost,
For this is not a day of ease or return.

١. رُدّا كُؤوسَكُما عَن شِبهِ مَفؤودِ
فَلَيسَ ذَلِكَ يَومَ الراحِ وَالعودِ

2. O cupbearer, I see that I have settled for
The water of tears instead of grape water.

٢. يا ساقِيَيَّ أَراني قَد سَكَنتُ إِلى
ماءِ المَدامِعِ عَن ماءِ العَناقيدِ

3. And I spend the night finding rest when
The voice of the wailers, not the voice of singers, splits it.

٣. وَبِتُّ يَرتاحُ سَمعي حينَ يَفتُقُهُ
صَوتُ النَوادِبِ لا صَوتُ الأَغاريدِ

4. So withhold joy, I will not partake of it,
And tell the love from me the solace of love.

٤. فَأَمسِكا الراحَ إِنّي لا أُخامِرُها
وَبَلِّغا الغيدَ عَنّي سَلوَةَ الغيدِ

5. Then go on, and leave me be, I am a man
Whose affair has turned to anxiety and sleeplessness.

٥. ثُمَّ اِمضِيا وَدَعاني إِنَّني رَجُلٌ
قَد آلَ أَمري إِلى هَمٍّ وَتَسهيدِ

6. After Uthman do I seek fine life's delight
And fortune not diminished?

٦. أَبَعدَ عُثمانَ أَبغي مَأرَباً حَسَناً
مِنَ الحَياةِ وَحَظّاً غَيرَ مَنكودِ

7. It saddens me that the caller of death came seeking him
While I am not sought.

٧. إِنّي لَيَحزُنُني أَن جاءَ يَنشُدُهُ
داعي المَنونِ وَأَنّي غَيرُ مَنشودِ

8. The meteors compete with you in glory
On a ground you were hidden in, O youth of generosity.

٨. أَمسَت تُنافِسُ فيكَ الشُهبَ مِن شَرَفٍ
أَرضٌ تَوارَيتَ فيها يا فَتى الجودِ

9. Had the prophets not preceded you in it
We would have said you were the best endowed with it.

٩. لَو لَم تَكُن سَبَقَتكَ الأَنبِياءُ لَها
قُلنا بِأَنَّكَ فيها خَيرُ مَلحودِ

10. The wind wished, if it were subjugated,
To carry your bier from the towering heights.

١٠. وَوَدَّتِ الريحُ لَو كانَت مُسَخَّرَةً
لِحَملِ نَعشِكَ عَن هامِ الأَماجيدِ

11. And the sun, if it descended from its horizon
And chose with you the abode of desolation and wilderness.

١١. وَالشَمسُ لَو أَنَّها مِن أُفقِها هَبَطَت
وَآثَرَت مَعكَ سُكنى القَفرِ وَالبيدِ

12. The morning wished, if they had marched,
To drape this absence in its own raiment.

١٢. وَقَد تَمَنّى الضُحى لَو أَنَّهُم دَرَجوا
هَذا الفَقيدَ بِثَوبٍ مِنهُ مَقدودِ

13. O traveler, events made you great, and you did not make them,
In gentleness and force.

١٣. يا راحِلاً أَكبَرَتكَ الحادِثاتُ وَما
أَكبَرتَها عِندَ تَليينٍ وَتَشديدِ

14. You cried until even the lofty and bestowals, and the
Tears of sorrow did not dry upon you.

١٤. أَبكَيتَ حَتّى العُلا وَالمَكرُماتِ وَما
جَفَّت عَلَيكَ مَآقي الخُرَّدِ الخودِ

15. Your family and all the companions spent the night
Mourning you, grieved and drenched.

١٥. وَباتَ آلُكَ وَالأَصحابُ كُلُّهُمُ
عَلَيكَ ما بَينَ مَحزونٍ وَمَعمودِ

16. They weep for the loss of a man inclined
To good, examining mankind, praised among people.

١٦. يَبكونَ فَقدَ اِمرِئٍ لِلخَيرِ مُنتَسِبٍ
بِالبِشرِ مُنتَقِبٍ في الناسِ مَحمودِ

17. O clan of Abaza, still the dwellings
Are horizons for buds and a forest for lions.

١٧. بَني أَباظَةَ لا زالَت دِيارُكُمُ
أُفقَ البُدورِ وَغاباً لِلصَناديدِ

18. May God not decree after this day exposure
Except joy upon honor and eternity.

١٨. لا قَدَّرَ اللَهُ بَعدَ اليَومِ تَعرِيَةً
إِلّا هَناءً عَلى عِزٍّ وَتَخليدِ

19. And God made great your reward in Uthman
In God's mercy he spent the night, excellent, buried.

١٩. وَعَظَّمَ اللَهُ في عُثمانَ أَجرَكُمُ
في رَحمَةِ اللَهِ أَمسى خَيرَ مَغمودِ
