1. It quenched Damascus, and those in it, with what it spread
Of clouds, each pouring down heavily

2. A land in which is every seducer of mankind
Glorifying the maidens with glances and maidens

3. A land in which spirits softened and became balanced
So its night is everlasting in the softness of magic

4. And from the clarity of its water, consciences appear
So everything it covers is unveiled

5. As if it were molten crystal, flowing
Flowing over diamonds, peridots and pearls

6. It was delicate until the air surpassed it
And became balanced in slenderness and waist

7. And every flushed-cheek is confused
Perplexing the guide of sight in his cheeks

8. And everyone clothed in beauty in robes
Of an unviolated, pure beauty that averts the glance

9. And everyone busy with benefactions, so he has
No path but generosity and glory

10. God has nurtured in it companions, their natures
Finer than dew above roses and flowers

11. For among them is a brother of mine, whenever
I remember him, my heart flutters with embers

12. A sincere, true friend, purest of affection
Free, noble and chaste, immaculate

13. I described his friendship to me devoid of any blemish
In the clarity of our nights and in hardship

14. If I spent my life being generous to him
I would give my life in an instant of his nearness

15. I wonder at the heart and the passions burning it
In every blink with the fire of anxiety and thought

16. And how can it remain thus and no wonder
For the Lord of Glory and Danger has said

17. If fire were the destroyer of ruby
Ruby would resemble stone

18. But His mercy for an ardent heart few defend
And the turns of fate have challenged him with others

19. They did not shake him from the faith of loyalty
Nor from dignity, nor his other traits

20. Oh longing, wait, for the heart is not of stone
And oh sorrows, gently, I am but human
